Exploring the Scenic Wollyubong Trail in May

In May, when the lush greenery is at its peak, the beautiful weather makes it the perfect season to escape somewhere.
I recently visited a place where I could take a break from my daily routine and enjoy the healing power of nature.
Let me introduce you to the Wollyubong Trail, a popular healing course where many people come to enjoy light walks along stunning natural landscapes.
Wollyubong, located in Yeongdong, Chungbuk, translates to 'a peak so beautiful that even the moon stays for a while,' making it a representative tourist spot of the region.
The trail surrounding Wollyubong consists of three routes, and it is a famous destination for visitors in spring and autumn.
Wollyubong Trail Route 1 (Yeoul Sound Trail) - A scenic course to appreciate the beauty of Wollyubong.
Route Length: 2.7 km (Wollyubong Plaza - Woncheon Bridge - Seokcheon Stone Path - Wanjeong Bridge)

Starting from Wollyubong Plaza, Route 1 leads to Wanjeong Bridge through Woncheon Bridge and Seokcheon Stone Path. This section allows you to walk along the riverside and majestic cliffs, offering close-up views of Wollyubong's breathtaking scenery.
Route 1 features a mix of unpaved paths, stairs, and inclines, making it an enjoyable walk for those who want to experience the charm of Wollyubong in a short time.
Wollyubong Trail Route 2 (Sansaesori Trail) - An accessible deck path suitable for all ages.
Route Length: 3.2 km (Wanjeong Bridge - Baekhwa Village - Ummaeri)

Route 2 begins at Wanjeong Bridge, leading to Ummaeri Village through Baekhwa Village. This route consists of a flat deck path, making it easy for anyone to walk.
With a relatively gentle slope, this trail is perfect for a relaxed stroll under the shade of trees, accompanied by the soothing sound of water.
Wollyubong Trail Route 3 (Pungsong Sound Trail)
Route Length: 2.5 km (Ummaeri - Banyagyo - Banyasa)

This route starts from Ummaeri Village and leads to Banyasa, a thousand-year-old temple in Yeongdong, allowing you to enjoy both the cypress forest and the temple.
Visitor Information and Tips
Wollyubong can be crowded with hikers and trekkers on weekends. To avoid parking congestion, I visited around 8 AM on Saturday, and it was relatively quiet, allowing for easy parking at the free Wollyubong Plaza parking lot. I recommend an early visit.
The trail is shaded by dense trees, making it a cool walk, but bringing a simple hat is a good idea. Additionally, there are small convenience facilities like a kiosk and restrooms near the starting points of both Route 1 and Route 2.
Pets are allowed on the Wollyubong Trail, making it a great place to enjoy a walk with your dog, but remember to follow pet etiquette!
Visit Review and Recommended Routes
During my visit, I completed Route 1 and walked partway through Route 2. The trail is well-marked with signs, allowing for a stress-free experience while enjoying nature.
For a light stroll, I recommend Route 2 (Sansaesori Trail) as it is a flat, accessible path for everyone. However, if you want to explore the beauty of Wollyubong, Route 1 (Yeoul Sound Trail) offers a bit more challenge.
The total distance of the Wollyubong Trail (Routes 1-3) is about 8.4 km, which takes approximately 3.5 hours for adults. If you plan to walk the entire course, it's best to set aside half a day.
