Must-Visit Places in Goesan County
Goesan Veterans Theme Park has reopened, offering a newly renovated space for remembrance and relaxation.
In celebration of the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Movement, Goesan Veterans Park has been transformed into the Goesan Veterans Theme Park. The name change reflects a commitment to honoring those who served while providing a comfortable space for visitors.
A spacious parking lot is available at the park entrance, and there are no separate parking fees.
As you ascend slightly from the parking area, the first sight to greet you is the M48A5K2 tank. This exhibit, arranged with the cooperation of the Republic of Korea Army, serves as a reminder of the importance of national security and the spirit of patriotism.
The tank not only provides a meaningful sight for visitors but also serves as an educational resource on history.
Behind the tank, a wall explains the concepts of the fallen heroes and martyrs, along with a timeline of significant events from the Donghak Peasant Revolution to liberation. Information on the five national holidays and Memorial Day is also available, including an introduction to Mr. Kwon Dong-jin, one of the 33 representatives of the Korean independence movement from Goesan.
Across from the tank stands a statue of a guardian, with an informative space behind it explaining the meanings of the national flower, Mugunghwa, and the Taegeukgi (Korean flag). This setup provides an educational element that naturally conveys the significance of history and love for the country to children visiting the park.
If you continue up the park, you will find the newly created Memory Observatory alongside the existing Chungong Tower. You can reach this area via a gentle uphill path or stairs located behind the tank.
As you climb the hill, the veterans park that has existed for years comes into view. This space is dedicated to honoring the noble spirits of those who sacrificed their lives for the country and instilling patriotism in future generations.
One of the newly added facilities is the Memory Observatory, which offers a panoramic view of Goesan-eup, adding another attraction to the park.
Existing memorials from the previous veterans park have been preserved. The Chungong Tower was first erected in 1961 and rebuilt in 1991, while the Chungyeol Tower was established in 1967 and renovated in 2012.
Behind the Chungong Tower are the 6.25 War Memorial, the Medal of Valor Memorial, and the Vietnam War Memorial, which were relocated here from Goesan Sports Complex in 2012.
Another notable structure is the O Yong-sa Tower, built to honor five police officers who died in action during a confrontation with armed insurgents in 1950. This memorial, symbolizing the police with a hawk grasping the Mugunghwa, stands approximately 4.7 meters tall.
The veterans park has hosted various commemorative events like New Year celebrations, March 1st Movement Day, and Memorial Day. On March 1, 2026, the opening ceremony of the Goesan Veterans Theme Park will coincide with the March 1st Movement commemorative event.
Goesan Veterans Theme Park serves as a memorial space honoring the fallen heroes while also functioning as a park that residents can easily visit. It is an ideal place to take a leisurely stroll along the renovated walking paths and learn about history and love for the country with children.
