Exploring the Majestic Sobaeksan: A Summer Retreat

As the early summer heat arrives, many seek to escape the dense urban jungle for the open arms of nature. Sobaeksan, standing majestically at 1,440 meters, is often referred to as the 'Alps of Korea.' It has garnered immense affection not only from hikers but also from casual visitors.
Recently, with the entrance fee to national parks being waived, there has been a significant increase in visitors looking to enjoy nature on day trips during the weekends. Here are four unique attractions of Sobaeksan in June: the soothing sounds of cool valley waters, the refreshing breeze along the ridges, and the late-blooming spring flowers.
With no entrance fee, Sobaeksan National Park allows everyone to explore it for free, easing the financial burden of weekend outings. Even if you bring a vehicle, parking fees are reasonable—4,000 won on weekdays and 5,000 won on weekends for mid-sized cars—making it easy to spend a whole day healing in nature.
Upon reaching the summit area of Birobong, the fierce winds prevent trees from growing, revealing vast grasslands that resemble the Swiss Alps. This exotic scenery has recently become a popular spot for 'Instagrammable' moments among the younger generation.
Despite its rugged elevation of over 1,000 meters, Sobaeksan remains beloved due to its gentle and rounded terrain. The hiking trails are primarily composed of soft dirt paths rather than sharp rocky inclines, making it relatively easy for beginners and those with knee issues.
The most popular route, the Samgadong Course, features a gentle slope and allows hikers to reach Birobong's summit in about 2 hours and 30 minutes. Before starting, it's advisable to consult the Visitor Center for recommendations on trails that match your fitness level, ensuring a safe and enjoyable hike.
In June, as the sun shines brightly, the lush forests and cool streams of the Cheondong Valley Course become particularly popular. Starting from the Cheondong Visitor Center, this trail runs alongside the valley, where the sounds of clear water and birds create a natural air-conditioning effect.
After descending, consider heading to downtown Danyang to explore local restaurants featuring specialty dishes like garlic set meals or visit famous tourist spots like Dodamsambong. Start your day with fresh mountain air and conclude with a leisurely culinary journey in the afternoon.
