Hongseong, located in Chungcheongnam-do, is a region renowned for its rich history of producing numerous great figures.

This place, imbued with the spirit of the great Manhae Han Yong-un and General Kim Jwa-jin, is also home to another artistic giant who made a significant mark in the history of modern Korean art.

That giant is none other than Lee Eung-no (1904–1989), known as Goam.

The 'House of Lee Eung-no' (Goam Lee Eung-no Memorial Hall), located in Hongbuk-eup, Hongseong-gun, is a cultural space established on the site where the artist was born and raised.

It serves as a special place to honor his artistic achievements and connect with the public.

As you walk towards the memorial hall from the parking lot, the first thing that catches your eye is the harmonious view of the House of Lee Eung-no against the gentle slopes of the surrounding landscape.

The modern architecture, made of concrete, wood, and earth, appears to lie gently on the ground, as if it has always been a part of nature.

As you stroll through the front yard and grassy area of the memorial hall, an outdoor sculpture stands against the backdrop of the blue sky.

This sculpture, welcoming the light and wind of nature, visually embodies Lee Eung-no's lifelong pursuit of 'harmony between nature and humanity.'

Upon entering the exhibition space, the first thing that greets visitors is a 'Chronology Table' that succinctly summarizes the life of Goam Lee Eung-no.

Following the chronology, you can read about the artistic struggles and adversities he faced during the Japanese occupation, the Korean War, and the tumultuous modern history.

In the initial exhibition area, two pivotal paintings capture attention: 'Yongcha Yongcha' and 'Abstract.'

'Yongcha Yongcha' conveys the dynamic energy of people laboring vigorously in the field of life.

The lines extending from the brush tip interweave as if they are alive, capturing the collective movement of humans working together to carry heavy burdens or achieve something through combined effort.

Next, you will encounter the thematic area of 'Figures,' which symbolizes the peak of Lee Eung-no's art.

From a distance, it may appear as black dots or fragments of letters, but as you approach, you realize they are all 'people' in motion.

Some are holding hands, others are stretching their arms as if dancing, and some are advancing vigorously.

The birds painted by Goam are not still; they seem ready to fly off the canvas with sharp and graceful wingbeats.

The 'cow,' embodying the spirit of our nation, also captivates with its massive and solid structure, showcasing a quiet dynamism through strong contrasts of lines.

Despite not depicting the external form precisely, Goam's genius shines through in the way he captures the inner strength and vitality of the subjects.

After absorbing the intense artistic world of Goam throughout all the exhibition halls, you may need a moment to rest.

The House of Lee Eung-no offers a perfect resting spot called 'Goam Book Café,' where visitors can fully experience the cozy and warm essence of the place.

This space goes beyond just serving tea; it is a unique cultural space.
