Located on a scenic hill within Goegang Bulbit Park, Hwaam Seowon is a historic Confucian academy that offers both cultural depth and breathtaking views. Founded in the Joseon Dynasty to honor scholars like Lee Hwang, it stands as a testament to the region's dedication to education and tradition.
Although the interior is not always open to the public, the well-preserved traditional architecture and the panoramic view of the Goegang River make the climb worthwhile. It is a perfect spot to appreciate the serene atmosphere of Goesan while tracing the footsteps of ancient scholars.
A Historic Academy Overlooking the River
When visiting Goesan, Hwaam Seowon(화암서원) is a hidden gem that commands a majestic presence from its hilltop location. While the address points to 313 Goegang-ro, the actual entrance requires a short walk up along the wooden deck stairs starting from Goegang Bulbit Park.
Seowons were private educational institutions established during the Joseon Dynasty to honor Confucian sages and cultivate scholars. As you approach, you are greeted by the traditional Hongsalmun gate, a symbol of sacred ground, setting a solemn yet peaceful tone for the visit.
History of Resilience
Hwaam Seowon was originally founded in 1622 by local Confucian scholars to commemorate the virtues of great figures such as Lee Hwang, Lee Mun-geon, and Kim Je-gap. Like many others, it was destroyed in 1871 due to the seowon abolition decree but was lovingly restored by local scholars in 1956 and relocated to its current site in 2004.
The premises include the Moyeon-sa shrine, a lecture hall, and living quarters. Inside the shrine, tablets of ten sages are enshrined, with Lee Hwang at the center. Although the doors were closed during my visit, peeking over the low walls revealed that the buildings are well-maintained and preserved in their original form.
Scenic Views and Seasonal Beauty
One of the main attractions of Hwaam Seowon is the view it offers. Positioned high on a hill, it overlooks the winding Goegang River and the city of Goesan. It is a place where you can enjoy the distinct scenery of all four seasons, from lush greenery to snowy landscapes.
Access to the site is facilitated by well-maintained wooden steps, but visitors should be cautious during winter as they can be slippery. Whether you are there for the history or the view, the serene atmosphere provides a perfect escape from the busy world.
