The brewery's history dates back to 1920, when Japanese brewer Takeyoshi Tobonko established a modern facility. In 1931, Mr. Yu Jeong-soo founded the 'Daeseongsa Brewery' nearby, marking the beginning of traditional makgeolli production.
In 1937, Mr. Yu acquired the brewery established by the Japanese and expanded it into the 'Goesan Brewing Co., Mokdo Plant.' After the liberation, in 1955, it was renamed 'Mokdo Brewery,' continuing its legacy to this day. Over the past century, Mokdo Brewery has withstood the ups and downs of modern Korean history, preserving the tradition of brewing.
Mokdo Brewery is recognized not just as a production facility but also as a modern cultural heritage site, designated as the 2nd registered cultural asset of Chungcheongbuk-do. The main building and related facilities, constructed during the Japanese colonial period in 1939, have retained their original appearance, serving as a living museum that vividly showcases the evolution of the modern brewing industry.
Especially noteworthy are the preserved fermentation rooms, storage facilities, and distillation equipment, which provide invaluable resources for scholars and tourists alike. Visitors can observe traditional nuruk production and aging processes, making it an ideal place to experience the history of Korean alcohol culture.
The brewery's exterior features a 'ᄃ' shaped structure, with buildings surrounding a small courtyard. The red brick and wooden architecture from the colonial era evoke a sense of nostalgia.
Currently, Mokdo Brewery actively produces various traditional liquors using local specialties. Notable products include Mokdo Fresh Makgeolli (5% alcohol), Goesan Baekju (9%, unflavored cloudy rice wine), Mokdo Clear Liquor (14% light liquor), and Neuti (15%). Each beverage boasts a unique flavor shaped by Goesan's pristine nature and long-standing brewing techniques. Goesan Baekju, in particular, is a pure cloudy rice wine without added artificial sweeteners, characterized by its rich and deep taste.
Visitors can tour the brewery to learn about the alcohol production process and enjoy tastings. While children are welcome, the alcohol sales and tasting areas are designated for adults only.
The brewery is also frequently used as a filming location for dramas and entertainment programs. Recently, it has gained popularity among younger generations as a retro photo spot, transforming into a new cultural space.
Mokdo Brewery is more than just a place for making alcohol; it serves as a cultural platform connecting the past and present. While adhering to traditional methods, it develops products that cater to modern tastes and contributes to revitalizing the rural economy through collaboration with the local community. A glass of liquor from Mokdo Brewery offers a unique experience of savoring the fragrance of history and the taste of nature.
