Exploring the Historic Mo Wonjae and the Ancient Zelkova Tree in Gyeryong City

Today, we introduce the magnificent zelkova tree, over 500 years old, located in Wangdae-ri, Dumamyeon, Gyeryong City, and the nearby traditional house from the Joseon Dynasty, Mo Wonjae.
On a sunny spring day, the serene village of Wangdae-ri in Gyeryong appeared incredibly calm and peaceful.
The most striking feature of this village is the zelkova tree, a protected tree that has steadfastly watched over the village for more than 500 years.
This zelkova tree is not just an ordinary tree; it holds significant meaning as it embodies the region's history and nature. It has been designated as a national protected tree.
This tree symbolizes the village and serves as a cultural heritage.
Visiting during the vibrant season of spring, where all life awakens, I was surprised by its beauty, which was even more stunning than I had anticipated.
Previously, I had visited in winter when the tree was bare, and I did not realize how grand it truly is. However, coming back in spring, with its lush green leaves, it appeared even more majestic.
The tree's large circumference made it look truly impressive and sturdy. Its thick trunk and expansive branches reaching skyward suggest it has thrived well over the years.
As a protected tree, it receives care such as pruning, pest management, soil protection, and the installation of protective fences and information boards.
The Wangdae-ri protected zelkova tree also has an information board indicating its age of 550 years, species as zelkova, height of 21m, and circumference of 5m. It was designated as a protected tree on November 1, 1982, located at 379-1 Wangdae-ri, Dumamyeon, Gyeryong City, Chungcheongnam-do.
The tree appears larger and more majestic due to its wide, sturdy base and its grand branches extending in all directions.
The branches reaching towards the sky and the vibrant green leaves create a beautiful and lively scene.
This protected tree has lived here for five times longer than the average human lifespan.
The residents of this village have likely looked upon this zelkova tree for generations, from great-grandparents to grandchildren.
As you walk up the village path past the protected tree, you will find Mo Wonjae.
Mo Wonjae is located at 281-1 Wangdae-ri, Dumamyeon, Gyeryong City, and has been designated as cultural heritage material No. 308 in Chungcheongnam-do.
Mo Wonjae served as the residence of Kim Guk-gwang, encapsulating the political and Confucian traditions of the Joseon Dynasty.
It was established in 1623 during the reign of King Injo.
Mo Wonjae can be described as a space dedicated to honoring ancestors and continuing scholarly traditions.
The key figure associated with Mo Wonjae is Kim Guk-gwang, who passed the state examination during the reign of Sejong and played a crucial role in the ascension of King Sejo.
He participated in the compilation of the "Gyeongguk Daejeon" and rose to the position of Chief State Councilor, being a key bureaucrat in establishing the nation's laws and systems.
Mo Wonjae was built 140 years after Kim Guk-gwang's death by his descendants, including Kim Jip and Kim Ho, to honor their ancestors, strengthen family ties, and continue scholarly pursuits.
The buildings exhibit a neat and balanced Confucian architectural style, prioritizing formality and practicality over extravagance.
Mo Wonjae has undergone several renovations, and as a traditional Hanok, its original form is relatively well-preserved, making it an excellent cultural resource for studying Joseon architectural styles.
The former residence now serves as a tranquil space for historical experiences. Behind the residence lies the grave of Kim Guk-gwang and the burial grounds of his descendants.
