Must-Visit Places in Goesan County

Hwayang Seowon: A Spring Travel Destination with Historical Significance

We visited Hwayang-ri in Cheongcheon-myeon, the place where the eminent Confucian scholar Song Si-yeol spent his later years.

Interestingly, he left behind more than just one trace in this land.

Designated as a national historic site in 1999, the Song Si-yeol Historic Site in Goesan serves as a testament to a rich historical narrative.

Born in 1607, Song Si-yeol inherited the academic lineage from Kim Jang-saeng and Kim Jip, reaching the pinnacle of Confucianism in the Joseon Dynasty.

He played a significant role as a mentor to King Hyojong and actively influenced political matters, including the theoretical framework for the Northern Expedition.

Scholars of his time referred to him as "Songja," likening him to Zhu Xi, and his name frequently appears in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty.

Despite facing exiles and reinstatements during various political upheavals, he met his end in Jeollabuk-do at the age of 83, after being transported to Seoul.

Posthumously reinstated, he was honored at both the Confucian Shrine and the Royal Ancestral Shrine.

The site embodies Song Si-yeol's love for his country and his commitment to preserving the dignity of his people.

While the site suffered historical damage during the Japanese colonial period, it has since been restored by his descendants.

Hwayang Seowon was established for Confucian education and scholarly research during the Joseon era.

Although most of the buildings have disappeared, the remnants quietly testify to the past.

Upon arrival, one feels not emptiness but rather a sense of 'time filled.'

Instead of the solemnity typical of seowons, this place impresses with its harmony with nature.

The sounds of the wind, sunlight filtering through the trees, and the serene stillness create a picturesque landscape.

Interestingly, unlike regular seowons, the stairs here are short, requiring cautious steps to avoid slipping.

Hwayang Seowon's greatest charm lies in its easy walking paths, making it suitable for families and seniors alike.

Especially in spring and autumn, the surrounding nature becomes more beautiful, transforming the site into a healing space.

In spring, tender green sprouts emerge, while autumn brings falling leaves that envelop the grounds in a different ambiance.

This place offers a sense of tranquility and small joys absent from urban life.

If you wish to experience a slower, deeper journey, I highly recommend walking through Hwayang Seowon in Goesan.
