As I prepared for my trip to Yesan, many people likely first thought of Yesan Market. However, I initially planned to focus on food, but one place that exceeded my expectations was Chusa Kim Jeong-hee's Historic House!
Honestly, I thought it would just be a quiet visit to an old house. But when I arrived, I realized it was much more than a simple hanok tourist spot.
It has historical significance, is lovely for a stroll, and offers beautiful photo opportunities, which is why it's highly recommended as a place to visit in Yesan!
I would recommend it as a serene and peaceful place to experience relaxation.

Who was Chusa Kim Jeong-hee?
Kim Jeong-hee, known by the pen name 'Chusa', was a prominent scholar and calligrapher of the late Joseon period. While he is often recognized for his calligraphy, he was also an outstanding academic.
He made contributions in various fields, including epigraphy, practical learning, and historical research, and even interacted with scholars from the Qing Dynasty in China.
His famous work, 'Sehando', is well-known as it embodies loyalty to his disciples during his exile, rather than being just a simple painting.

This historic house is known as the birthplace and childhood home of Kim Jeong-hee. Once you visit, you'll quickly understand why so many people come here.
Initially, I wondered if there was really anything special about the house, but I felt compelled to visit given its fame!
1. The atmosphere of the hanok is truly wonderful. From the entrance, the stone wall path leads you into a tranquil environment unique to traditional hanoks. It’s not just a trendy café-style hanok but a genuine old house with a different weight to it.
Walking through the sarangchae, anchae, and shrine, I could see the structure of an old yangban house, and the neatness of the surroundings made it feel healing just to walk around.
2. You can feel the historical and humanistic emotions here. This place is not only beautiful but also evokes thoughts of Chusa’s life, who continued his studies and art despite his exile, making the space feel different.
3. It’s great to combine with a Yesan travel itinerary. Many people visit Chusa Kim Jeong-hee's Historic House before heading to Yesan Market.
The calm and quiet atmosphere from the entrance encourages a leisurely walk, and the beautiful stone path and open courtyard add to the experience.
The six-room maru is said to be of rare scale, and the anchae, which is the women's living space, is hidden from view, as it was home to Princess Hwasun, a royal.
I found learning about the old living styles naturally through the separation of the sarangchae and anchae quite enlightening.

Visiting both the historic house and the Chusa Memorial Hall helps to better understand why he is such a renowned figure. During the spring daffodil season, the scenery harmonized with the historic house is particularly beautiful, attracting many visitors!

I thought the seasonal views of the historic house would be even more beautiful! With various flowers like red plum blossoms, magnolias, daffodils, and spider lilies blooming in each season, it offers new scenery, and I find myself wanting to visit again for the last snow scene!

The experience space will be open for trial operations starting April 28, with various programs that would be great for families to participate in together!
Programs like trying out Chusa-style calligraphy, drawing Sehando, and painting orchids are intriguing for those who haven’t encountered such activities before!
