Visit Review
I visited the "Dongheon" which is recorded as a space where significant local matters were decided among various cultural assets located in Goesan County.
Have you heard of Anminheon, also known as the Goesan Dongheon? The fact that this government office building, which was the center of local administration during the Joseon Dynasty, has remained intact to this day made me eager to visit.
Anminheon was built as the government office of Cheong-an County in the 5th year of King Taejong's reign, in 1405. As if to tell the history of the past, the steles of the officials who managed this place are neatly arranged at the entrance.
Although the Dongheon has undergone several repairs and is not in its original form, the existing structure is still sufficient to appreciate the architectural beauty of the late 19th century.
Interestingly, the name 'Anminheon', which means 'to comfort the people', reflects the intention of the local governor to govern the people well.
While history books often portray government offices negatively, Goesan's naming shows a genuine care for the people, revealing the wisdom of its residents. Additionally, a large tree seems to protect Anminheon, suggesting that it will continue to offer its blessings into the future.
Anminheon exudes a simple charm. Round pillars are supported by square bases, and the rafters are not adorned with extra embellishments.
Most importantly, I felt that Anminheon is a great place to visit with children. Its modest size allows for a relaxed exploration, making it easy to discuss topics like 'what a government office is' and 'what duties the magistrate had' at a child's level.
Curious about the tree that stands guard over the government office, I approached it closely. After enduring hundreds of years, the tree bears numerous marks of joy and sorrow from its long history.
There are also quaint tables set up around the large tree for picnicking. Even if you are not on a cultural heritage trip, it is a lovely spot to take a break during a visit to Goesan.
After leaving the government office, I headed to the Cheong-an Community Center, which serves the current residents. Nearby, the Fire Pump Exhibition Hall offers visitors another interesting attraction. The Cheong-an Dongheon exceeded my expectations with its rich offerings, so be sure to visit!
