Must-Visit Places in Goeasan County
Goeasan Veterans Park has been revamped into a theme park dedicated to veterans, offering rich history and leisure activities.
March 1, 2026, marked the 107th anniversary of the March 1st Movement, which began in 1919 as a fight for independence from Japan.
Many independence activists hailed from Goeasan, including Kwon Dong-jin, one of the 33 representatives who signed the Declaration of Independence, and Hong Beom-sik, who took his own life in response to the news of Korea's annexation by Japan in 1910.
Every year, commemorative ceremonies are held at Goeasan Veterans Park in Dongbu-ri, Goeasan-eup, on March 1st, Liberation Day, and the anniversary of the Korean War.
This year's ceremony took place at the newly transformed Goeasan Veterans Park.
The park begins at the historic home of Hong Beom-sik in Dongbu-ri, Goeasan-eup, which is also the birthplace of the novelist Byeokcho Hong Myeong-hee.
It is designated as a cultural heritage site by North Chungcheong Province and a memorial site by the Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
Hong Beom-sik and Hong Myeong-hee were father and son, and in 1919, Hong Myeong-hee prepared for the March 1st Movement here.
On the hill to the right of the historic home lies the Goeasan Veterans Park. Initially established in 2012, the park underwent significant renovations and reopened as a theme park dedicated to veterans just before the March 1st celebrations.
The park now features a pedestrian deck that follows the hillside, connecting various areas in three phases, including the existing Solhyanggi Path.
To the left of the historic home is a children's playground, the Geongon Gamri Square, and the Memory Observatory, which connects to a scenic walking trail lined with beautiful pine trees.
The park includes various sculptures and facilities themed around veterans, honoring the sacrifices of those who fought for the nation.
The park serves as a serene retreat while commemorating the noble spirits of independence fighters and national defenders.
After paying respects at the memorials, visitors can enjoy the scenic views from the observatory.
The park combines the themes of remembrance and leisure, making it a perfect spot for family outings.
