Exploring the Future of Libraries in the Age of AI

Hello, I am Choi Hong-dae, a social media supporter from Dangjin.
During this transformative era of artificial intelligence (AI), I visited the Dangjin City Central Library.
AI is reshaping various sectors, including work, daily life, game development, design, broadcasting, law, and taxation.
Recently, a trend called 'Vibe Coding' has emerged, allowing even beginners to generate all code using AI.
It has reached a level where one can create game executions and graphic representations solely with a general-purpose AI like ChatGPT, given enough time.
Effectively utilizing AI requires high literacy skills; without basic literacy, one cannot accurately convey what results AI can produce.
To enhance productivity and work capabilities, it is essential to gain experience through reading books from various fields.
This is my first visit to the Dangjin City Central Library since the beginning of 2026.
The library has also conducted humanities programs questioning human thought in the age of AI.
We had the opportunity to reflect on the value of human creativity and thought, which only humans possess, and to consider the new role of humanities.
On the first floor of the library, there is the Haerum Gallery.
The gallery offers visitors opportunities to appreciate various artworks alongside reading activities by exhibiting works from local artists and original illustrations from picture books every month.
This time, a photo exhibition featuring children learning Korean and the unique aspects of children from different countries was on display.
What significance does the Korean language hold in the age of AI?
There is a dedicated reading space for children, separated into areas for infants and older kids.
The 'Humanities on the Road' program is designed to engage local residents with lectures, experiences, and explorations centered around cultural facilities like libraries.
Program applications can be made through the Dangjin City Lifelong Learning Platform, and more details are available on the library's website.
As AI takes on more roles, those with extensive knowledge, high literacy, and rich experiences will become increasingly productive.
It is said that the intelligence of a being that receives questions is only as good as the questions posed to it.
Survey results showed that users of the Dangjin City Library expressed satisfaction with the overall services provided.
When asked how the library aids citizens' lives, responses included improved information search and utilization skills, increased educational and learning opportunities, heightened interest in literature and arts, and assistance with parenting and educational issues.
Newly published books, including those on investment and AI, have caught my eye.
These days, libraries are creating spaces for open conversations.
Based on the survey results, the Dangjin City Library is working on improving its operations and policies to provide services that better satisfy citizens.
The ability to ask questions, think critically, and understand the world through language remains inherently human.
While AI generates answers, the quality of those answers ultimately depends on the questions humans ask.
Thus, libraries are not becoming obsolete; rather, they are becoming increasingly important.
In an age overflowing with information, we need places where we can encounter verified knowledge and profound thinking.
The humanities programs, exhibitions, and various spaces for citizens at the Dangjin City Central Library have evolved into platforms that foster 'the power of thinking,' transcending simple reading facilities.
As AI becomes smarter, humans must read more and think deeper, with libraries always serving as the starting point.
