Exploring the Fascinating Geological Sites of Muju

Hello from Muju County!
Today, we would like to introduce a travel route to the Jin-an and Muju National Geopark's geological sites, which become more interesting the more you know about them.
This is not just a place with beautiful scenery; it is where billions of years of Earth's history are encapsulated in rocks and streams.
Whether you prefer driving or trekking, take your time to enjoy the journey.
What is the Jin-an and Muju National Geopark?
The National Geopark is designated by the Ministry of Environment to preserve geologic resources of high scenic value, also serving educational and tourism purposes.
Muju's geological attractions include Yongchu Waterfall, the Oeguchun Dong District (Naje Tongmun, Susimdae, and Pahoe), and the O-sanri granite gneiss, recognized as part of the Jin-an and Muju National Geopark since 2019.
Today, we will focus on the travel route around the Oeguchun Dong District and the Yongchu and Chilyeon Waterfalls.
STOP 1. Naje Tongmun —
The first scenic spot of the Gucheon Dong 33 Views, where history and geology meet.
Naje Tongmun is the gateway to the Oeguchun Dong District and the starting point of your Muju Gucheon Dong adventure.
Located in Socheon-ri, Seolcheon-myeon, Muju, this tunnel is a natural cave excavated from rock.
The name 'Naje' refers to Silla and Baekje, indicating the cultural divide in language and customs.
In the 1960s, it was designated as the first scenic spot of Gucheon Dong, gaining its current name.
Don't miss the stunning view of the Wondangcheon River from outside the cave, a popular photo spot.
STOP 2. Pahoe — A stunning view where water spirals beautifully.
Approximately 10.9 km from Naje Tongmun, you will find Pahoe, one of the three major attractions of Gucheon Dong.
Here, clear waters create unique stream landscapes.
Pahoe signifies a place where calm waters tumble down, creating a spectacular scene.
STOP 3. Susimdae — A scenic area known as 'Little Geumgangsan.'
Just 0.4 km upstream from Pahoe, Susimdae is a representative scenic site of Muju.
The name comes from a story of enlightenment experienced by a monk who saw the clear waters here.
STOP 4. Yongchu Waterfall — A designated geological site.
After exploring Gucheon Dong, head to the entrance of Chilyeon Valley, where Yongchu Waterfall awaits.
This waterfall drops 5 meters down a rocky cliff, surrounded by beautiful pine trees.
STOP 5. Cheonil Waterfall — 'The one and only waterfall under the sky.'
Located in Bukchang-myeon, this natural waterfall cascades about 30 meters high.
The stunning view will leave you breathless.
Recommended travel route: Naje Tongmun → Pahoe and Susimdae → Cheonil Waterfall → Yongchu Waterfall.
Please check the weather conditions before visiting, as the water level may rise.
Enjoy the living natural heritage of Muju, where the stories of billions of years of Earth’s history are etched in the rocks and streams.
Take a moment to appreciate the beauty around you.
