Exploring the Buyeo Royal Tombs
I recently visited the Buyeo Royal Tombs and experienced the history of Baekje.
Despite the chilly weather, I saw visitors strolling along the paths, quietly taking photos or reading the descriptions, which was quite impressive. The absence of the usual hustle and bustle of tourist spots made it easier to focus on the surroundings.
At the Buyeo Royal Tombs, you can encounter tombs numbered from 1 to 7 in succession. The rounded mounds create gentle curves, blending harmoniously with nature.
Surrounding the royal tombs are paths leading to the city wall and a forest filled with pine trees.
The well-maintained paths are perfect for leisurely walks, and there are benches along the way to rest without any hassle.
It’s a great place for studying history or simply taking a walk to clear your mind.
The first impression of the city of Buyeo is always one of elegance. It may not be flashy, but it exudes a sense of dignity, with a rough appearance that hides thoughtful details.
On this trip to Buyeo, the first place I visited was the Buyeo Royal Tombs. Although I had visited Buyeo several times before, I had never had the chance to walk on its vast grounds, so I was particularly excited about this visit.
Upon entering, the first thing that caught my eye was a neat sign reading 'Buyeo Royal Tombs.' This site was once better known as the 'Namsanri Ancient Tombs.'
As I read through the information, I discovered an interesting fact: this tomb complex is located just outside the 'Naseong,' the outer wall that defended the Baekje capital, Sabi.
If the inner city was a vibrant space for the living, this area, separated by a wall, served as an eternal resting place for the dead. This layout gives insight into how the Baekje royal family viewed life and death and how they integrated their authority into urban planning.
My initial assumption that it was simply a collection of royal tombs was pleasantly proven wrong as soon as I arrived. The Buyeo Royal Tombs were much more expansive than I had imagined, offering a sense of openness that was refreshing.
Walking along the mounds from tomb 1 to tomb 7, I found the curves to be quite intriguing. Unlike imposing structures, they resemble the gentle slopes of the surrounding hills, showcasing Baekje's unique aesthetics that reflect royal dignity without defying natural terrain.
On a cold winter day, the beauty of the royal tombs became even more apparent. The typical noise of tourist attractions was replaced by the sound of the wind and the quiet footsteps of visitors, creating a serene atmosphere.
The winter landscape can often seem bleak, but here it was an exception, thanks to the dense pine forest surrounding the tombs. The evergreen pines stood tall among the bare deciduous trees, adding vitality to the scenery.
Walking along the pine forest path, the gentle scent of pine filled the air, providing a moment of 'healing' that washed away the complexities of daily life.
The Buyeo Royal Tombs serve as an excellent textbook for students studying history and a perfect walking path for weary modern individuals. The paths are neatly maintained, making them accessible for everyone, and the benches along the way are great for reflecting while gazing at the distant mountains.
