Exploring the Beauty of Uirimji Reservoir

As the winter ice melts away, Uirimji Reservoir is awakening with gentle ripples, while the trees on Sunju Island are enjoying the arrival of spring.
Uirimji is one of Korea's representative ancient water management facilities, with a history that dates back to the Samhan period. It is the oldest reservoir still supplying agricultural water to Cheongjeon Field.
The longevity of Uirimji's history is evidenced by the ancient pines found along its embankment. These centuries-old trees serve as a natural heritage that attests to the reservoir's historical significance. Walking along the embankment, the scent of pine is reminiscent of a thousand-year-old aroma.
Constructed alongside Byeokgoljae and Susanje during the Samhan period, Uirimji remains the only reservoir functioning as such to this day. Designated as Scenic Site No. 20 in 2006, it has become a beloved tourist destination in Jecheon, renowned not only for its reservoir function but also for its breathtaking scenery.
Surrounding Uirimji, a symbol of Jecheon and one of Korea's finest reservoirs, are beautiful pavilions built to appreciate the stunning landscape. The harmonious view of the lake, ancient pines, and pavilions exemplifies the beauty of 'Jecheon's first scenic spot.'
Yeonghojeong Pavilion, located on the southern embankment of Uirimji, was established in 1807 by Lee Jip-gyeong. It is also a historic site where local militia gathered during the Jeongmi Uprising.
Gyeonghooru Pavilion, a two-story structure near Yongchuk Waterfall on the western side of Uirimji, was constructed in 1948 by local officials and citizens. Next to Gyeonghooru, there are facilities for refreshments and rest, allowing visitors to relax in the shade of ancient pines while enjoying the view of Uirimji.
Ureukjeong Pavilion, situated on the eastern side of Uirimji, is a modern structure built to honor the legendary gayageum master Ureuk, who is said to have spent his later years playing music by the reservoir. In spring, new buds bloom on the ancient tree beside Ureukjeong, and cherry blossoms create a picturesque scene.
Another famous attraction near Uirimji is Yongchuk Waterfall and the glass observation deck perched above it. After rainfall, the sound of water cascading from about 30 meters onto the rocks creates a magnificent spectacle. The glass deck, installed in 2020, transforms from opaque to transparent when approached, providing a thrilling view of the waterfall below.
At night, the bridge illuminates with colorful lights, enhancing its beauty. After enjoying the pavilions and the waterfall, it's time to take a leisurely ride on a duck boat across the lake, soaking in the stunning scenery of Uirimji.
The prices for duck boat rentals vary based on the number of people and type of boat. (Approximately for 30 minutes)
Uirimji also features a media facade waterfall behind the lakeside stage, utilizing a 30-meter high and 15-meter wide rock wall as a screen for immersive videos showcasing Jecheon's history, legends, and vibrant media art, lasting around 10 minutes.
Next to the lakeside stage, there is a large white text sculpture labeled 'JIMFF 2026,' symbolizing the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival and serving as a photo zone to commemorate the 2026 event.
Uirimji is a place that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, making it an excellent spot for family outings. Additionally, many restaurants and cafes nearby allow visitors to indulge in both visual and culinary delights. The cherry blossoms at Uirimji are expected to bloom after April 10.
