Must-Visit Places in Goesan County

Winter Scenery of Baekma Reservoir, Perfect for a Leisurely Walk

Goesan, adorned with beautiful mountains and valleys, is home to stunning reservoirs. Notable among them are Wonpung Reservoir, which can be enjoyed alongside Suok Waterfall, and Mungwang Reservoir, famous for its autumn ginkgo tree path. A great spot for a light stroll is Baekma Reservoir, located in Sosaem-ri, Sarimyeon, close to the rural experience village of Baekma.

At Baekma Reservoir, the embankment is visible from the experience village on the hill, with Baekma Mountain stretching out in the background. As you pass the embankment and drive along the road, you will quickly encounter the Eungam Village bus stop, with a sign pointing to the walking trail at the village entrance.

Beyond the wide fields, the Baekma Mountain hiking trail begins at an elevation of 379 meters, connecting Goesan and Eumseong.

Baekma Reservoir features a 2.7 km circular trail that includes dirt paths, deck paths, and embankments, allowing for about an hour of pleasant walking. A few years ago, colorful rice paddy murals were created below the embankment, and a winter festival was held in the Baekma area. However, due to the increasingly warm weather, the winter festival has not been held since last year.

The walking trail, starting from a cabbage field after the autumn harvest, connects to a deck path via a wooden bridge. In the middle of the reservoir stands a solitary tree, adding charm to the scenery. The deck path leads visitors along this tree. The reservoir is an artificial one designed for agricultural water supply, and the area around Sosaem-ri has wide plains interspersed with fields and rice paddies.

Baekma Reservoir's landscape changes with the seasons, set against the backdrop of vast farmland and Baekma Mountain. From late spring to autumn, lush green crops flourish, but currently, during the farming off-season, the scenery is monochrome. In the late afternoon, as the reservoir begins to freeze, the gray landscape deepens.

In January, winter days are short. Despite the winter solstice having passed, the sun sets around 5 PM. As the days gradually lengthen, spring will soon arrive. Few people visit Baekma Reservoir during winter, allowing for a peaceful hour of solitude. Only towards the end of my walk did I encounter an elderly villager.

The circular path around Baekma Reservoir consists of four trails: a deck path over the water (1/4), an embankment path (1/4), and dirt and village paths (2/4). Among these, the deck path offers the most picturesque views. Walking along the deck path feels as if you are walking on water, with calm waves gently lapping against the shore, exuding tranquility. Observing the patterns created by the freezing reservoir adds a delightful touch.

At the end of the deck path, the village path begins. This rural village features low hills and vegetable gardens. The cold weather keeps the village quiet, with dry reeds and fallen leaves scattered about, and bare tree trunks adding to the solitude. Following the S-shaped path along the reservoir, you eventually arrive at the embankment.

From the reservoir embankment, Baekma Mountain can be seen across the way, with wide fields below. In the Baekma area of Goesan, black rice, brown rice, glutinous rice, and sorghum are primarily produced, showcasing the region's clean natural environment. The sun sets over the vast fields, marking the end of the day. A late stroll at Baekma Reservoir coincides with sunset, promising a beautiful view on clear days.

Baekma Reservoir is perfect for a tranquil stroll. If planning a longer trip, consider combining it with a hike up Baekma Mountain.
