Winter Reflections on a Riverside Walk
A few days ago, I experienced a sharp pain as if my skin was being cut by the cold air. Strangely enough, I found myself wanting to rewind time, and that was because I had just explored a beautiful walking route despite the harsh winds. I felt it was a shame to keep this place to myself, so today I would like to share my recent visit.
Jeminchun and Wangneung Bridge
▲ The view of Jeminchun and Geumgang from Wangneung Bridge
To reach my destination, I visited Jeminchun, which flows through the city center of Gongju. As I moved from Gumsoru at Gongsanseong to the tomb of King Muryeong, I could see Jeminchun. This local river runs north and south through the city. Wangneung Bridge is constructed over Jeminchun, and looking north from there, you can see Geumsong Bridge, the last bridge on Jeminchun.
Geumgang River and Historic Bridges
▲ Geumgang and Geumgang Bridge
Beyond Geumsong Bridge lies the Geumgang River, one of the four major rivers in South Korea. The Geumgang Bridge, built in 1932, connects the northern and southern areas of Gongju. You can also see the second Geumgang Bridge, which is currently under construction. Looking downstream, you can spot the Baekje Grand Bridge.
Jeongji Mountain and Baekje-Era Heritage
▲ On the left of Baekje Grand Bridge is Jeongji Mountain and Jeongji Mountain Tunnel.
Turning left from Baekje Grand Bridge, you can see an observation deck at the end of the bridge, which is the site of Jeongji Mountain. This was a place for national rituals during the Baekje period and is believed to be the location of Anmujeong, one of the eight pavilions along the Geumgang River. Being recognized as one of the eight pavilions means it is an optimal spot to enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Geumgang River. After climbing Jeongji Mountain, I was able to appreciate the stunning views. Below Jeongji Mountain, there’s the Jeongji Mountain Tunnel, completed in 2002.
Beginning of the Baekje Cultural Trail
▲ The distance from Gongsanseong to the Baekje Cultural Trail is about 500m.
On this day, my destination was the Baekje Cultural Trail, which was completed in September last year. The project aims to create a historical and cultural walking path connecting Gongsanseong, a UNESCO World Heritage site, with the tomb of King Muryeong, Jeongji Mountain, and Gomana Ru.
Waterfront Deck and Trail Facilities
Gongju City has developed waterfront decks, walking paths, and historical signage through the Baekje Cultural Trail project, and I was particularly interested in exploring the waterfront deck.
▲ There is a resting area below Geumsong Bridge.
The starting point of the Baekje Cultural Trail's waterfront deck is where Jeminchun meets the Geumgang River. Under Geumsong Bridge, at the northern end of Jeminchun, a small resting area has been developed, with the waterfront deck located to the left of the resting area.
Walking the Trail in Winter
Since the Baekje Cultural Trail was recently established, there were no detailed maps available on the signage. Before the official tourist season begins, a map with detailed information, similar to the Gongju Royal Road course, should be prepared as soon as possible.
▲ The view of Geumgang from the Baekje Cultural Trail
Upon reaching the waterfront deck, I was greeted by the winter scenery along the Geumgang River. I was able to view the Geumgang Bridge and the surrounding area from a new perspective. Looking up from below, I could feel the grandeur of the Baekje Grand Bridge.
End Point and Walking Tips
▲ The beautiful scenery along Geumgang from the waterfront deck
Even though it wasn’t the season for blooming flowers, I was pleasantly surprised by the remarkable landscape and the sight of a low-hanging moon over the Geumgang River, along with flocks of waterfowl cutting through the strong currents.
▲ The last point of the Baekje Cultural Trail waterfront deck
As I walked and took photos, I noticed a few people who had gone ahead returning shortly. It turned out that the Baekje Cultural Trail ends just before the Jeongji Mountain Tunnel, about 500m away, rather than continuing to the tomb of King Muryeong. Residents of Gongju cannot access the tunnel, so they had to retrace their steps. Travelers can exit onto the road connected to the waterfront deck and head toward Gomana Ru or visit the National Gongju Museum and Gongju Hanok Village after exploring the Gongju tourist complex.
Final Impressions
Walking along the deck path before February, I felt rejuvenated as I enjoyed the views of the Geumgang River and its surroundings. The round trip on the Baekje Cultural Trail takes about 30 to 40 minutes, but I didn’t envy the people who had once gazed upon the Geumgang from Anmujeong. The Baekje Cultural Trail offers a unique experience and memories, even in the cold of winter. I highly recommend visiting if you are planning a trip to Gongju.
