The Ancient Ginkgo Tree of Eumnaeri, a Thousand-Year-Old Living History
I visited Cheong-an Elementary School after hearing rumors about a thousand-year-old tree located within its grounds. Despite the chilly weather, I was excited to see this remarkable natural wonder.
Upon arriving at the school entrance, I felt a tinge of regret for not visiting in the autumn. If I had, the ginkgo tree would have showcased a spectacular golden display, making it even more breathtaking.
The ginkgo tree in Eumnaeri, located on Cheong-an Eumnae-ro in Goesan County, is not just an ordinary tree. Estimated to be around 1,000 years old, it has withstood the test of time, bearing witness to the history of Goesan.
This ancient tree serves as a living testament to history, a spiritual anchor for the local community, and a guardian of the village.
If the tree could speak, it might say, "Having lived so long, I have been recognized as a natural monument, and now more visitors come to see me!"
According to legend, during the Goryeo Dynasty, King Seongjong wanted a pond in the castle for his people to enjoy festivities. The citizens dug a pond called Cheongdang, and this ginkgo was one of the trees planted around it.
Interestingly, it is said that the tree survived for a millennium because a snake with ears lived inside it, punishing anyone who attempted to harm the tree.
The Eumnaeri ginkgo tree stands 16.4 meters tall with a trunk circumference of 7.35 meters. Its majestic form is visible from afar. Standing beneath it, one can feel enveloped by its enormous branches, which create a comforting canopy overhead.
Locals have long regarded this ginkgo tree as their village guardian. Every year during the first full moon of the lunar calendar, they hold a ritual under the tree to pray for peace and prosperity.
Perhaps due to its thousand years of existence, the ginkgo tree humbles every visitor, reminding us of the fleeting nature of our lives and the incredible vitality of nature.
After leaving the ginkgo tree, I wandered into a nearby park. This area, adorned with flowers throughout the seasons, transforms into a water play area in summer, becoming a haven for local children.
Strolling leisurely through the eco-friendly park, I enjoyed the tranquility of Goesan's beautiful natural environment, marking the beginning of a delightful journey.
While it may not be a grand park like those in large cities, the simple and charming walking spaces harmonized with nature invite you to take your time and savor the leisurely pace of small-town life.
With the introduction of a free rural bus service in Goesan County, both residents and tourists can now use the bus without needing a transportation card or cash, enhancing accessibility and convenience.
Considering the unique characteristics of rural areas with limited public transport, this initiative aims to improve transportation welfare and reduce travel costs, making it beneficial for both locals and visitors.
The ancient ginkgo tree in Eumnaeri is located at 8 Cheong-an Eumnae-ro 3-gil, Cheong-an-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do.
