Exploring Solmoe Shrine: A Catholic Pilgrimage Site in South Korea
Located in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, Solmoe Shrine is a quaint space that serves as a significant Catholic pilgrimage site.
Upon arrival at the entrance, visitors are greeted by a statue of Pope Francis and Father Andrew Kim Daegon, who are depicted holding hands and smiling.
Despite the passage of time, Solmoe Shrine continues to attract Catholic pilgrims. It is also the birthplace of Father Andrew Kim Daegon, whose statue is installed in St. Peter's Basilica in Vatican City.
The unique name 'Solmoe' is derived from pure Korean language, adding to the charm of the site.
Solmoe Shrine has a deep connection with Saint Andrew Kim Daegon, the first Korean priest, and stands as a representative Catholic site in South Korea.
The entrance features neatly designed restaurants where visitors can grab a quick bite. Local food from Dangjin is available for purchase, making it a great option for travel souvenirs.
Setting aside its religious significance, I enjoyed a leisurely stroll through the shrine, which is popular for its healing atmosphere.
Moving left past the church, I encountered the Seven Sorrows of Mary, a sculpture that depicts the seven sorrows and pains experienced by the Virgin Mary due to her son, Jesus Christ.
From the prophecy of Simeon to the burial of Jesus, I found myself naturally clasping my hands together while gazing at the delicate and poignant sculptures.
Venturing further in, I arrived at the Solmoe Shrine Church, where visitors could pray during open hours. I took the opportunity to reflect on my goals for 2026 and confess my past mistakes.
The historical hall at the beginning of the shrine offers a glimpse into the history of the Daejeon Diocese, where martyrs once lived. The opposite exhibition room displays photographs of various churches and pilgrimage sites within the diocese, making it a pleasant area to explore.
Near the cultural tourism guide's house at the entrance, there is a space for stamping, which could be useful for those participating in a stamp tour.
Within the church grounds, you can find the statue of Father Andrew Kim, the birthplace site, and a memorial hall. Pilgrims can reflect on the faith of early Korean Catholic martyrs while praying and meditating here.
Especially on September 16th, the anniversary of Father Andrew Kim's martyrdom, many believers gather to celebrate a memorial mass.
Solmoe Shrine and the church not only hold religious significance but also possess historical and cultural value, allowing visitors to share in both a leisurely walk and a healing experience.
As I sought peace of mind away from the city's hustle and bustle, I eventually found myself facing the statue of Father Andrew Kim.
Next to the statue, there is a portrait of the priest alongside a cross and a statue of Pope Francis gazing at him. The sight of the priest holding a cross within a traditional Korean house felt oddly unfamiliar.
I could understand, to some extent, the hardships faced by those who believed in Catholicism during the Joseon Dynasty.
Solmoe Church stands as a living testament to the history of Korean Catholicism, offering great assistance to believers and anyone interested in history and culture.
