The Cheong-an Hyanggyo, a cultural heritage site in Chungcheongbuk-do, greets visitors as they enter through the outer gate into the courtyard. Interestingly, upon arrival, one can almost hear the echoes of students reading from long ago filling the air.
Cheong-an Hyanggyo maximizes the use of national heritage through programs that emphasize historical significance, the preservation of traditional culture, and community engagement.
Currently, Cheong-an Hyanggyo is not only hosting cultural lectures but also recruiting participants for the 2026 Cheonam Academy Summer Camp for elementary students.
The camp offers a variety of enriching humanities programs, such as Chinese character classes and gayageum (traditional Korean instrument) lessons, providing students with a meaningful vacation.
To ensure quality education, the number of participants is limited to 20, allowing for a focused and structured learning environment.

During events, the laughter of children will fill the area around the hyanggyo, transforming it into a vibrant community space for all generations.
Gathering in the same place where scholars of the past pursued knowledge, today's descendants enjoy cultural arts and share a cup of tea, exemplifying the value of learning from the past while embracing the present.
To fully appreciate the hyanggyo, it's helpful to understand the difference between hyanggyo and seowon (private Confucian academies). Both served as educational institutions during the Joseon Dynasty, but their natures are distinct.
Hyanggyo, established by the state, was set up by the Joseon government in each local area to teach Confucianism and conduct rites for Confucius and other sages.
In contrast, seowon were private educational institutions founded by local scholars to honor specific scholars and cultivate future generations.
Understanding hyanggyo as 'state-sponsored public education' and seowon as 'privately established education' makes it easier to grasp their roles. The presence of numerous hyanggyo from the Joseon era in the Goesan area attests to its historical significance as a center of scholarly activity.
While the exact founding date of Cheong-an Hyanggyo is unknown, it is believed to have been established in the early Joseon period, likely before 1703, when a nearby examination hall was built.
The current structures were restored between 1979 and 1981, following the typical layout of hyanggyo, with a lecture hall (Myeongnyundang) in the front and a ritual space (Daeseongjeon) at the back.
