Exploring Baekseok Olmi Village: A Journey into Traditional Korean Culture

I recently visited Baekseok Olmi Village located in Sunseong-myeon, Dangjin City.
This visit was part of a social media supporters workshop organized by Dangjin City, and it was a meaningful opportunity to experience and document the region's traditional food culture and village resources.
Baekseok Olmi Village operates around the traditional confectionery brand 'Olmiwon', continuously preserving local values based on agricultural products produced in Dangjin and long-standing manufacturing methods.
The village felt like more than just a place for experiences; it seemed to embody a cohesive story and flow.
Upon arrival, I was immediately struck by the calm and orderly atmosphere of the rural village. Unlike the bustling city, I could leisurely explore the village, which created an ideal environment for experiencing traditional confectionery.
Olmiwon not only creates jobs for local residents but also realizes value through products made from village-grown agricultural produce.
The main program of the workshop was a hands-on experience of making Olmiwon's traditional sweets. It began with a basic introduction to the ingredients and processes involved in creating these treats, prompting a reflection on the depth of traditional food.
While I usually encounter finished sweets, experiencing the process of making them firsthand made me appreciate the time and care involved.
During the hands-on experience, I got to work with the dough and shape the sweets myself. The meticulous process required more precision than I expected, demanding focus and allowing me to immerse myself in the experience.
Even when using the same ingredients, the shapes and textures varied slightly depending on the creator, which was quite impressive. This experience reinforced the understanding that traditional food is not merely a product but a culmination of human touch and heart.
After the sweet-making session, we enjoyed a refreshing drink made with plum extract, which was delightful and memorable.
We also had the chance to explore the village's merchandise shop, where various products embodying the village's identity and stories were neatly displayed alongside Olmiwon's traditional sweets. It felt like more than just a retail space; it conveyed the narrative of Baekseok Olmi Village and Olmiwon.
This visit to Baekseok Olmi Village provided an opportunity to witness how local resources can transform into content, and how the village's narrative evolves into a brand. It was particularly meaningful to document the experiences I observed, aligning with the purpose of the Dangjin City social media supporters workshop.
The diverse souvenirs, including pickled plums, gochujang, and traditional sweets made by the village grandmothers, added to the charm of the visit.
The programs at Baekseok Olmi Village, from traditional sweet-making to village exploration and merchandise shopping, are highly recommended for families and anyone interested in traditional food culture. Visiting with children would provide a wonderful opportunity to engage with traditional food and rural culture naturally.
Baekseok Olmi Village, encountered in Sunseong, Dangjin, is not a rapidly consumed tourist spot but a place to slowly discover meaning. The village features simple rural landscapes and areas designed for visitors to relax comfortably.
I believe it will showcase different sceneries with the changing seasons, making it a perfect spot to escape the busy routine and feel at ease.
I hope more people come to know about such local resources, and I am documenting the stories of Baekseok Olmi Village experienced during this Dangjin City social media supporters workshop.
