Discover the scenic beauty of western Jeju Island with a visit to the Suwolbong Geo-Trail. Perfect for a light stroll, especially in the autumn season, this trail offers stunning views and a fascinating geological experience. I recently explored this area with my family, and the Suwolbong Geo-Trail and its observatory were truly delightful. The easy terrain makes it suitable for a family trip with children.
Suwolbong Geo-Trail Geotrail
Location: 3993-10, Gosan-ri, Hangyeong-myeon, Jeju-si, Jeju-do
Parking: Available near the summit
Admission: Free
Estimated Time: 30 minutes
The path to Suwolbong Geo-Trail involves a gentle descent, as shown in the pictures. While parking is available at the summit, there isn't any near the trail entrance, but parking along the roadside wasn't difficult.
I heard that this area is geologically significant, and it was fascinating to walk along the trail, observing the unique geological formations from the entrance. The surrounding ocean views are also breathtaking.
Don't miss the Ung-al Coast Trail, steeped in the legend of Nokgo's Tears. This moderately challenging trail is perfect for those who enjoy trekking and is a must-visit on your western Jeju itinerary.
Nokgo's Tears (Ung-al Coast Trail)
The legend of Nokgo's Tears tells the story of siblings Suwol and Nokgo, who came to Suwolbong to gather medicinal herbs for their ailing mother. Tragically, Suwol slipped and fell from the cliff, and Nokgo wept in sorrow. The water flowing from the cliffs is said to be Nokgo's tears.
A short, approximately one-minute walk down the hill will lead you to the entrance of the Suwolbong Geo-Trail.
Follow the beautifully crafted steps down, and be sure to pause and capture some memorable photos. This spot is a natural photo zone!
The Geo-Trail offers stunning views from above, but the cliffs are even more impressive when viewed from below. It's almost like gazing at the cliffs of Navarone.
The distinct layers of the geological formations are a reminder of nature's grandeur.
Further inside, you'll find cave bunkers, but I didn't feel the need to explore them. If you're curious, be cautious as the path can be a bit rough. It's about a 5-minute walk from the trail.
Suwolbong Summit
A notable advantage of visiting the Suwolbong Observatory is that you can drive all the way to the top. If you're interested in visiting an Oreum (volcanic cone) in Jeju but are concerned about the physical exertion, this is the perfect place!
At only 77 meters above sea level, it's not a particularly strenuous walk, but there's no need to decline the opportunity to drive right up to the summit.
The parking area isn't huge, but it seemed adequate for accommodating tourists.
Summit Observatory
At the summit of Suwolbong in Jeju, you'll find a modest observatory and a pavilion-style shelter, often used by adults for relaxation.
The view from the observatory is magnificent, with the vast, calm western sea of Jeju stretching out like a carpet. The uninhabited island of Chagwido, with its beautiful curves, stands guard in the distance.
On a calm day with gentle waves, even the fishing boats create a picturesque scene. On lucky days, you might even spot dolphins playing in the sea, though I haven't been fortunate enough to see them yet.
After enjoying the refreshing sea view, I relaxed on the back of the observatory, taking in the scenery. It was a truly delightful break.
It took about 20 minutes to explore the Suwolbong Geo-Trail and another 10 minutes to visit the summit observatory, for a total of 30 minutes. If it fits into your itinerary, be sure to visit this western Jeju course.
