A Refreshing Summer Outing at the Library
Goesan County Library & Goesan Education Library
The library is a great indoor outing to escape the scorching summer sun. Many people visit libraries on rainy or extremely hot days. In Goesan, there are the Goesan County Library and the Education Library, along with about ten smaller libraries throughout the region. Libraries such as Jungwon Library, Jangyeon Village Library, Songnam Library, Cheongcheon Library, and Solmaengi-gol Library are spread across various areas including Jangyeon-myeon, Mungwang-myeon, Cheongcheon-myeon, and Cheongan-myeon.
Among them, I enjoyed some reading time at the representative libraries of Goesan County, the County Library and the Education Library.
Goesan County Library
• Operating Hours: Weekdays 09:00~22:00 / Weekends 09:00~18:00
• Closed on Mondays and legal holidays
• Book lending: 5 books per person for 14 days (can be extended once for 7 days)
The first place I visited was the Goesan County Library, which opened in March 2025. It covers three floors: the first floor has a children's reading room, the second floor has a general reading area and a youth space, and the third floor features a cultural center program room and a book cafe. The library has been consistently loved by the residents of Goesan County since its opening, and each time I visit, I see many people making use of it.
The library serves as a space for children to gather intellectual nourishment during their summer and winter vacations. From late July to mid-August, the Goesan County Library runs a summer reading program, and an event featuring the author of "Cheering for Cabbage," On Sun-young, was also held. It must have been a delightful time for children to enjoy books.
The children's reading room on the first floor is spacious and comfortable, with an open reading space and a dedicated area for individual reading activities. The Goesan Reading Room hosts a transcription project where participants can slowly write down a passage or page from a book on manuscript paper, leading to a deeper reading experience.
The second floor features the youth space and general reading area. In the youth space, friends can engage in reading activities in a more relaxed environment, while the general reading area is filled with a variety of genres. Methods for classifying and arranging books are introduced through the secrets of call numbers, allowing visitors to quickly find their desired books.
One unique feature of the Goesan County Library is its large multi-screen display. The auto-playing 3D visuals resemble viewing a work of art. The third floor consists of a lounge and classrooms, where visitors can also enjoy the outside scenery through large windows. The Cultural Center announced its regular programs for the second half of 2026, with the application period from August 4 to 11, and the educational period running from September to December.
After leaving the Goesan County Library, I headed to the Goesan Education Library, located a 10-minute drive away in a bustling area. It opened in 1971 as the Goesan County Library under the Chungcheongbuk-do Office of Education, underwent remodeling in 2018, and became the Goesan Education Library in 2019.
Goesan Education Library
• Operating Hours: General Reading Room 09:00~18:00 / Study Room Weekdays 09:00~21:00, Weekends 09:00~18:00
• Closed on the first and third Mondays of each month and on holidays
• Lending: 5 books per person for 15 days (can be extended once for 7 days)
Upon entering, you will see a centuries-old protected tree, and the building resembles an elementary school. It feels welcoming for people of all ages. The Goesan Education Library, with its 55-year history, has its own charm distinct from the newly opened Goesan County Library. The first floor houses the general reading room and children's reading room, while the second floor contains lifelong learning rooms, a general study room, and a laptop study room. The third floor is a multipurpose room.
The 55-year-old library features an efficient space design that maximizes its limited area. The first-floor lobby combines book exhibitions, periodicals, and a lounge, with children's and general reading rooms at both ends. The hallway lacks air conditioning, but the reading rooms are comfortable. The children's reading room has many books arranged on low bookshelves, and a separate reading area for toddlers has also been created. A relay transcription project of world masterpieces for children is also underway.
The general reading room has shelves packed with books, designed to be accessible for adults. The moment you enter the reading room, the pleasant smell of books fills the air. Curated book recommendations and DVDs are available, and computers for searching book information are provided. The transcription experience is also available in the general reading room, making transcription a must when visiting the libraries in Goesan. Completing a letter, sentence, or page fosters a deep appreciation for writing.
As you ascend the stairs to the second floor, the lifelong reading room comes into view, followed by the general reading room and laptop study room, while the third floor is a multipurpose room. The lifelong reading room and multipurpose room are only open during events. The reading rooms are freely accessible to anyone, providing a quiet space to enjoy personal reading time or study during vacation periods.
Although the mornings and evenings have become quite cool, the midday heat persists. It seems likely to continue for a while. I recommend visiting the libraries. The Goesan County Library and the Goesan Education Library offer reading culture courses, transcription activities, and meetings with authors, providing children with a fulfilling time to escape the heat during the remaining summer vacation.
