Discovering the Hidden Healing Spot: Sincheok Reservoir in Jincheon

Today, I want to share a story about a hidden healing spot in Jincheon, Chungbuk, called Sincheok Reservoir, perfect for a drive when your mind is cluttered. While Baekgok Reservoir and Chopyeong Reservoir may come to mind first, Sincheok Reservoir is the ideal choice for those seeking solitude and personal time.
As soon as I stepped out of the car and stood by the reservoir, I was captivated by the shimmering 'Yunseul' on the water's surface. The afternoon sunlight cast a warm glow, making the waves sparkle like jewels in the breeze—a breathtaking sight worthy of the term 'Yunseul hot spot.'
The warm glimmer of nature here is on a different level compared to the flashy neon signs of the city or the artificial light from smartphones. I found myself lost in the moment, experiencing true 'water meditation.'
I walked a bit closer along the gently sloping deck path that follows the reservoir, making it accessible for anyone to stroll without strain. The rhythmic sound of footsteps and the rustling of reeds in the wind was a pleasant auditory backdrop.
One of the significant advantages of this place is the absence of tall buildings, allowing for a wide view of the sky. The blue sky reflects perfectly in the reservoir, creating an illusion of walking on a mirror. I recommend taking a break on one of the benches along the path to read a book or listen to your favorite music.
During my visit, the soft light on the water was the main attraction, but in summer, the area transforms into a vibrant lotus garden. When the wide leaves cover the surface and pink lotus flowers bloom, it offers a different kind of vitality. In autumn, the colorful foliage of the surrounding mountains reflects in the water, creating a stunning landscape, while winter brings a serene yet profound beauty.
This deck path is the first 'carbon-neutral reservoir' model in the country. The lighting along the path operates on energy produced from solar power generated on-site, making it energy self-sufficient. Additionally, there are ICT-based environmental monitoring sensors and streetlights that measure water quality and fine dust levels in real time, ensuring a safe and pleasant walking environment for residents.
Sincheok Reservoir began in the 1960s as an artificial reservoir for agricultural water supply. However, it became obsolete for agricultural use when the nearby Sincheok Industrial Complex was established in 2014-2015. Following this, the reservoir suffered from water quality deterioration, unpleasant odors, indiscriminate fishing, and waste issues due to lack of management.
In 2020, the project was revitalized after being selected for the Ministry of Environment's 'Smart Green City' initiative, with an investment of approximately 10 billion KRW to purify the water and transform it into an eco-friendly ecological rest area for residents.
I hope this newly reborn space, resulting from the carbon-neutral and ecological restoration efforts, becomes a beloved refuge for the community. If you're planning a trip to Jincheon, be sure to include this spot in your itinerary!
