Hello,

This is Jangheung Travel.

Today, we're introducing you to Jangheung Jangcheonjae, a place where culture and history flow.

Located at 148-1 Cheongwansan-gil, Gwansan-eup, Jangheung-gun, Jeollanam-do,

it is also a point along one of the hiking trails of Cheongwansan Mountain.

Jangcheonjae is a national heritage site designated as Jeollanam-do's Tangible Cultural Property No. 72 on September 2, 1978.

It is said that the renowned Wi Baek-gyu (1727~1798), one of the three great scholars of the Honam region, who was knowledgeable in astronomy and geography, taught his disciples here.

Originally built during the reign of King Gongmin of Goryeo, it was largely damaged and rebuilt during the reign of King Gojong of Joseon. It is currently owned and managed by the Jangcheon branch of the Jangheung Wi clan.

The outer gate of Jangcheonjae, Cheongnoemun, gets its name from the sound of thunderous water that could be heard from the Jangcheon Valley during the monsoon season or heavy rains ("cheong" meaning "to hear," and "roe" meaning "thunder").

Inside, the building is arranged in a 'ㄷ' shape, with five sections in the front and four sections on the sides. The sides of the roof form an eight (八) shape, and the two sections in the front protrude forward, resembling a pavilion.

Thanks to this structure, you can enjoy a refreshing view of the surrounding nature and scenery from any point, making it a popular destination for poets and artists since ancient times.

The elders of the clan used to hold poetry gatherings here during the leisurely summer months, combining it with a summer retreat. The household that excelled in farming would host the event.

In particular, when scholars from other clans visited from outside the area, they would hold poetry gatherings to entertain them, which was the Wi clan's way of welcoming guests from afar.

The course leading up from Jangcheonjae offers a panoramic view of Cheongwansan Mountain and the Dadohae (archipelago).

If you're hiking on a cool autumn day, we recommend stopping by to appreciate the magnificent history contained within Jangheung Jangcheonjae.
