Jeongbangsa is an ancient temple located at the foot of Geumsusan in Jecheon, Chungbuk. It is said to have been founded by the monk Uisang during the Silla Dynasty, making it a millennium-old temple that retains traces of its long history and tranquil atmosphere.
Visitors to the temple can enjoy the breathtaking view of Cheongpung Lake and the beautiful mountain ranges surrounding Geumsusan, making it a hidden gem in Jecheon.
A Quiet Retreat in Jecheon
Jecheon is home to many well-known tourist spots like Uirimji, Cheongpung Lake, and the Cheongpung Lake Cable Car. Among them, Jeongbangsa offers a relatively quiet and serene atmosphere.
The view of Cheongpung Lake from Jeongbangsa exceeded my expectations. The calm lake and the surrounding mountains created a picturesque scene that made me stop and admire it for a while. Although it may not be a tourist hotspot, the peaceful ambiance of the temple makes it a perfect spot to relax and appreciate the scenery.
A Journey Begins Before Arrival
The road to Jeongbangsa gives you the feeling that the journey starts even before you arrive. The winding mountain road can be challenging, but there are several spots along the narrow path for vehicles to pass, making the drive easier than expected.
I felt a bit anxious at first due to the narrow road, but as I slowly ascended, the beautiful surroundings began to capture my attention. The lush green forest paths were refreshing, and the phytoncide-rich air coming through the car window lifted my spirits.
There is a parking lot conveniently located just below Jeongbangsa, making it easy to access. After arriving, it took only about a 5-minute walk to reach the temple.
Breathtaking Views of Cheongpung Lake
Upon entering, the first thing that caught my eye was the expansive view. The scenery of Cheongpung Lake from Jeongbangsa was much more refreshing than I had anticipated, prompting me to pause and take it all in.
In the distance, I could see a cruise ship passing over the lake, and the clear sky without a single cloud made the landscape even more vivid. Gazing at the mountains and lake before me, I felt a weight lift off my chest.
The large rock formations behind the temple blend harmoniously with the temple and mountains, creating a unique atmosphere that is distinctly Jeongbangsa. Although it is an old temple, it feels more like a serene retreat nestled in nature.
When visiting Jeongbangsa, I highly recommend wearing comfortable shoes. There are many stairs, and if you take your time to explore while taking photos, you may find yourself walking longer than expected. Given that it is a mountain temple, it's best to visit with a mindset to take your time.
This concludes my recommendation for Jeongbangsa in Jecheon, Chungbuk as a travel destination in May. Jeongbangsa is a great place to experience the season's beauty. While it may not be a flashy or bustling location, it offers a peaceful environment perfect for relaxation.
If you want to enjoy the scenic views of Cheongpung Lake and the surrounding mountains while taking a break, or if you are looking for a calm temple during your Jecheon trip, I recommend visiting Jeongbangsa.
