The Dangjin City Health Center is actively promoting its dementia prevention program, focusing on early detection through Alzheimer's risk blood tests.
This test, requiring only a single blood draw, can estimate the likelihood of developing Alzheimer's disease more than 10 years in advance. It is the first initiative of its kind led by a public health center nationwide.
A pilot program was conducted in the second half of last year with 320 participants, and it saw high participation rates due to the significant role Alzheimer's disease plays in dementia cases. As a result, the program has been expanded and officially launched this year.
Any Dangjin City resident aged 60 or older without a prior dementia diagnosis can apply for the test. It is conducted by appointment only. Upon visiting the center, applicants undergo a simple cognitive screening test (CIST) first, and only those with normal results proceed to the blood test.
The Health Center provides comprehensive support, from blood collection and test analysis to post-test guidance, all free of charge.
The results are categorized into three risk levels: low, borderline, and high. Customized services will be provided to each group, including lifestyle management guidance, dementia prevention materials, and connections to prevention programs.
However, individuals with noticeable cognitive decline should undergo screening at the Dementia Relief Center instead of this test. The Health Center also offers various other services through the Dementia Relief Center.
Dangjin City is taking pride in proactively providing essential services to senior citizens in this aging society.
Hopefully, this test will serve as an opportunity to start preventing dementia.
