Community Childcare Center in Songak

There is a saying that it takes a village to raise a child.
As nuclear families and dual-income households increase, the burden of childcare is growing. In this context, spaces within the community that allow parents to collaborate in raising their children play a significant role in ensuring healthy development.
The Songak Community Childcare Center, operated by the Dangjin Family Center, serves as a prime example of this. It is an open childcare space for parents and children, offering services such as sharing parenting information, facilitating interactions among parents, providing childcare support, and toy rental services, establishing itself as a key support hub for childcare in the community.
Located at 830 Tteulmosi-ro, Songak-eup, Dangjin-si, the center operates from Tuesday to Friday, 10 AM to 6 PM, and on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM. During lunch hours from 12 PM to 1 PM, rental and usage services are restricted.
Membership is available to residents of Dangjin-si, and individuals can join by visiting the center with a recent resident registration certificate and identification. The annual fee is 18,000 KRW, allowing families to borrow up to three toys for 14 days. After this period, a late fee of 500 KRW per day per toy applies.
One of the most attractive services offered is the 'Childcare Sharing Activity.' This traditional Korean culture of mutual assistance allows parents to collaboratively care for children and share parenting information. Parents with children of similar ages voluntarily form communities, regularly meeting for various activities, including storytelling, cooking, crafts, outdoor excursions, and seasonal experiences.
The center also features a toy library, helping parents alleviate the financial burden of purchasing toys, as children’s needs change rapidly. Members can borrow educational toys and various play items, fostering creativity and cognitive development in children while reducing storage issues at home.
Additionally, the center provides a cozy reading space on the second floor, where children can relax and enjoy books. The Songak Community Childcare Center is not just a play area; it is a space for parents to connect, alleviate feelings of isolation, and build relationships within the community.
In the upcoming month, the center will host a terrarium workshop, and families are encouraged to participate. The center also offers birthday party rooms, providing a unique space for celebrations without age restrictions.
Through community activities, both children and parents grow together, emphasizing that parenting is more enjoyable when shared. The center continues to foster a warm community where families can support each other.
