An Afternoon of Literature at Hapdeok Library: A Book Concert with Author Kim Keum-hee

What are your hobbies? I enjoy reading whenever I have time. While books don't always offer a special kind of inspiration, there are times when a particular author's writing resonates perfectly with me.
When I find such an author, I make sure to read their new releases and even watch their interviews or lectures. For me, Kim Keum-hee is that author. There's a solid weight within the calmness of her sentences, and her perspective on characters is so delicate that many of her sentences linger in my mind. So, as soon as I heard that Kim Keum-hee's book concert would be held at the Hapdeok Library in Dangjin, I cleared my schedule with excitement.
Kim Keum-hee is a novelist loved by many readers through her works such as "My Polar Diary," "Report on the Repair of the Great Greenhouse," "Sentimental, It Only Takes a Day or So," and "First Summer, Wanju."
She has an exceptional ability to meticulously capture small emotions and events of everyday life and expand them into narratives. Following the protagonists' emotions, I often find my own feelings naturally stirred.
Especially her recent works explore the layers of life and emotions with an even more mature perspective, making her an author I personally continue to look forward to. At this book concert, it was even more meaningful to hear about her unique work process, such as the process of creating characters in her works and the concerns that go into creating a single sentence.
Hapdeok Library is well-known among Dangjin City Libraries for actively supporting the cultural life of local residents. Various reading programs, book concerts, lectures, and hands-on programs are constantly held, which is a great advantage for citizens to easily access cultural activities in their daily lives.
The space is also neatly maintained and easily accessible, making it a great library to visit on weekends. On the day I visited, there were many citizens at the library, which naturally made me feel how much this space is loved in the community.
The theme of this book concert was “From Phenomenon to Event, the Journey of the Novel.” It was a time to hear how Kim Keum-hee observes phenomena and expands them into events in her novels, and what concerns she has in the process of constructing stories.
The author calmly explained the moments when sentences are born in everyday life, and listening to her felt like listening to a short essay.
In particular, a performance by jazz pianist Lee Seok-won was also held at this event, adding to the atmosphere. I only knew jazz piano as a 'sentimental music genre,' but on this day, I learned that jazz is music that is improvised without sheet music.
Every time the performance continued, the air in the space felt like it was changing softly, and the author's story and the melody of jazz were naturally connected, making it feel like a single performance.
After the lecture, the author's autograph session was held. Many readers stood in line with books in their arms, and I was one of them.
The author warmly greeted and signed each person, and the author's signature left in handwriting on a book became a good gift to remember for a long time.
Meeting a favorite author in person is always an exciting moment, and at this book concert, that feeling was naturally doubled. Most of the participants seemed satisfied, and I once again felt what cultural programs mean in the community.
What I felt through this book concert was that the library is playing a central role in local culture beyond simply being a space for borrowing books. I hope that more diverse humanities programs will be held in Dangjin in the future, and that opportunities for citizens to participate easily will continue.
Book concerts, lectures, and cultural programs are constantly being operated not only at Hapdeok Library but also at other libraries in Dangjin, so if you have a topic of interest, I recommend you to participate. When I visited, it was less burdensome than I thought, and it was a good choice to get new stimulation on a quiet weekend.
I hope that these cultural events will continue throughout Dangjin, and I hope that those who are interested will check the schedule for the next event along with the book concert review introduced today.
