Hongju Fortress Millennium Trail

Walking Goam Road

530-17 Goam-ri, Hongseong-eup, Hongseong-gun, Chungcheongnam-do

The Hongju Fortress Millennium Trail, even its name evokes a sense of history. This path allows you to explore Hongju, which has been a center of politics, economy, society, and culture for a thousand years, embracing its brilliant history. Among these routes, today we will walk the 'Goam Road,' the starting point of the journey and the first impression of Hongju.

The Goam Road of the Hongju Fortress Millennium Trail is approximately 900m long, starting from Hongseong Station, passing through Goam Neighborhood Park, and reaching the statue of General Kim Jwa-jin. It takes about 15 minutes on foot and has no steep slopes, making it easy for anyone to walk. It is especially recommended as the first course for travelers visiting Hongseong by train.

▲ Janghang Line Hongseong Station

Hongseong Station, arrived by train. The station building, modeled after the eaves of a traditional Korean house, is classic. Inside the station, there is only a waiting room, ticket office, and convenience store, but it is simple, neat, and tidy. Upon exiting the station, you will first encounter four great figures representing Hongseong.

A relief tower with reliefs of Manhae Han Yong-un, Baekya Kim Jwa-jin, Maejukheon Seong Sam-mun, and General Mu Min-gong Choi Young guards the front of the station.

Pick up a 'Hongju Fortress Millennium Trail' pamphlet at the Hongseong Station Tourist Information Center and walk along Goam Road.

The scenery around the station is quite unique. Unlike typical train stations, there are no restaurants, supermarkets, or accommodations usually found near the station. Except for the bus stop and taxi stand, what lies before you is a wide square, fields, roads, and an open view. The uncluttered atmosphere is unique.

Not far away are the Hongseong General Bus Terminal and a large supermarket. The proximity of the train station and bus terminal is a great advantage for travelers using public transportation.

'Goam Neighborhood Park' is located next to the Hongseong General Bus Terminal.

▲ Goam Neighborhood Park

Hongseong-gun was established as Hongju-mok during the Joseon Dynasty, after passing through Baekje, Unified Silla, and Goryeo, with 5 counties and 14 hyeons. In the 32nd year of King Gojong's reign, it was renamed Hongju-bu, and an observer was appointed to govern 22 counties from Pyeongbaek in Gyeonggi-do to Seocheon-gun. To commemorate this history, the Goam Neighborhood Park was created, and the patterned road was installed here.

The patterned road on the floor and the painted tiles drawn by 1,000 Hongseong citizens impressively capture the past and present of Hongseong.

After walking through the park for about 5 more minutes, a statue that exudes an overwhelming aura comes into view.

It is General Kim Jwa-jin, the hero of the Battle of Cheongsanri.

The statue was erected to commemorate the noble spirit and patriotism of General Kim Jwa-jin, the commander-in-chief of the Independence Army, who led the victory in the Battle of Cheongsanri in October 1920, annihilating about 3,300 Japanese soldiers, a victory that will shine brightly in the history of Korea's anti-Japanese independence war.

No matter which direction you look from, his unwavering spirit is conveyed. Take your time to walk around the statue and capture its majesty in your eyes.
