Hello. Today, I would like to share my experience visiting the recently opened Picture Book Garden 1937.

When one thinks of a government office, the image that comes to mind is often a rigid bureaucratic building. However, with the opening of Picture Book Garden 1937, this space has transformed into a bright and welcoming environment. Located in the heart of Cheongju, the familiar red brick building has begun to attract visitors.

Above the main entrance, a beautiful pink tree was in full bloom, enhancing the beauty of a spring day.

As you stand at the main entrance, the first thing that catches your eye is the large sign that reads 'Picture Book Garden 1937' atop the historic Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Office building. Established in 1937 through the collective efforts of the citizens, this building has long been a symbol of administration.

Now, while preserving its historical framework, the interior has been completely refurbished to become a multi-cultural space where all generations can enjoy together.

The thick columns and high ceilings remain intact, filled now with books, exhibitions, and resting areas. This allows visitors to feel the history of the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Office while simultaneously experiencing a completely different atmosphere.

Whether visiting with children or a partner, the ambiance feels comfortable and inviting, making it likely to quickly become a must-visit spot in Chungbuk.

The operating hours are from 10 AM to 6 PM, and it is closed on January 1st, every Monday, and during the Lunar New Year and Chuseok holidays.

Upon entering, you are greeted by a spacious reading area. With around 14,000 books available, the wooden floor is non-slip, making it safe for children to run around. In the center of the lobby, there are soft cushions, low steps, and a dedicated play area for kids. I thought it would be a great place to spend a rainy day without needing to go far.

While reading, I caught a glimpse of the courtyard of the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Office through the window, and it felt like the past and present were overlapping in one frame.

Climbing the stairs to the second floor, you enter a quiet exhibition space. Here, you can view original artworks by artist Jeong Seung-gak and pop-up works by French artist Elena Selina. It was meaningful to see the illustrations from 'Dog Poop,' which I had read in my childhood, in person.

The floor features footprints made of light, and animals hide among structures resembling a forest. It is an area where scenes from pop-up books unfold as media art, captivating both children and adults alike. Next to it is a hands-on corner where visitors can create their own pop-up cards, making it a perfect keepsake from a visit to Picture Book Garden 1937. I was impressed that the Provincial Office has transformed into a space not just for exhibitions but also for interactive experiences.

Going a bit further up, the atmosphere changes once again. The lounge, bathed in warm lighting, is furnished with comfortable sofas and is stocked with picture books and pop-up books for anyone to enjoy. It feels more welcoming, especially knowing that this used to be the governor's office.

On one side of the same floor, there is an exhibition area for viewing pop-up books, while the other side features an interactive space utilizing AI. When you draw on the screen, a story emerges, moving like a short fairy tale.

Additionally, you can learn about the history of the Provincial Office through the 1937 History Library.

Currently, Picture Book Garden 1937 hosts various experiential events, so I recommend checking the Chungbuk Cultural Foundation's website for advance registration.

After taking a leisurely tour, I felt that the Chungcheongbuk-do Provincial Office is not just a workplace but feels like a home for the citizens. It was heartwarming to see the old main building preserved while being filled with warmth through books, exhibitions, and experiences fitting its name, Picture Book Garden. If you're considering where to go on a day when you want to relax indoors, you might want to plan a visit to Picture Book Garden 1937 during your trip to Cheongju.
