A Visit to the Historic Hapdeok Catholic Church

As the biting cold temporarily recedes, I visited Hapdeok Catholic Church, where one can simultaneously feel the deep history of Dangjin and its exotic atmosphere.
This church, known as the oldest in Chungcheong-do and a significant site for Catholic faith, is a prominent historical and cultural asset of Dangjin that attracts visitors throughout the year.
Hapdeok Catholic Church, located in Hapdeok-eup, Dangjin City, was established in 1929 and is designated as Chungcheongnam-do Monument No. 145.
Its roots trace back to 'Yangchon Church,' founded in 1890 in Yesan-gun, but it was relocated to its current site in 1899, adopting the name Hapdeok Catholic Church.
As a central hub for Catholicism in the Naepo region, it holds significant importance in the history of Korean Catholicism.
Upon arrival, the church standing majestically on a low hill harmonizes beautifully with the tranquil rural landscape of Dangjin.
The two soaring spires that seem to pierce the sky are the first features to catch the eye as you approach the church's front.
This Gothic-style church, built with a harmonious blend of red and gray bricks, possesses a unique power that evokes a sense of reverence just by looking at it.
In one corner of the churchyard, a gentle statue of the Virgin Mary offers warmth and comfort, even amidst the chilly, foggy air.
Particularly, Hapdeok Catholic Church has a deep connection with Father Kim Dae-geon, the first Korean priest.
Examining the 'Dangjin Catholic Holy Site' sign at the church entrance reveals that it serves as a central point along the 'Burgnae Pilgrimage Path,' which connects the birthplace of the priest at Solmoe Holy Site to Sinri Holy Site.
The most notable feature of Hapdeok Catholic Church is its beautiful Gothic architecture made of bricks, which stands out even from a distance.
The tall structure, vertical repetition, pointed spires, and arched windows exemplify the characteristics of medieval European architecture.
Especially, the two bell towers visible from the front are symbolic of Hapdeok Catholic Church.
The vast lawn to the right of the church is known as a popular photo spot.
Recently, it has gained popularity as a 'must-visit location for life shots' among the MZ generation through social media, leading to an increase in visitors for self-wedding shoots and snapshots.
On the day of my visit, the thick fog actually enhanced the church's vintage charm.
Standing beneath the beautiful twin bell towers, you can also find a statue of Father Kim Dae-geon, the first Korean priest, born not far from here in Solmoe.
The interior of the church houses some of his remains, reminding visitors of its sacred significance.
Stepping inside the church, the grandeur seen from outside gives way to a warm and peaceful atmosphere.
As I walked down the long aisle between the tall columns, the mysterious light filtering through the stained glass windows scattered across the floor.
Immersed in the serene ambiance, I sat briefly on a chair, feeling the chaos of daily life fade away, leaving me at peace.
This open space, welcoming to everyone regardless of religion, made my trip to Dangjin feel even more special.
After exploring the church, be sure to take a stroll around the nearby Hapdeok Reservoir.
If time permits, consider walking along the pilgrimage path leading to Solmoe Holy Site or Sinri Holy Site to delve deeper into the history of Hapdeok Catholic Church.
