A Visit to Bukgosa Temple in Muju by SNS Supporter 'Bomppa'

Hello! This time, I'd like to introduce Bukgosa Temple, which is easily accessible on foot or by car from Muju-eup.
It's a quiet healing spot perfect for a short visit during your Muju trip. Let's begin the post!
Bukgosa Location
Muju-eup, Muju-gun, Jeollabuk-do / Mid-slope of Mt. Hyangro
Bukgosa Temple is located on the slopes of Mt. Hyangro, not far from the center of Muju-eup, making it very accessible.
It's within walking distance, making it ideal for a light stroll, and it's also accessible by car, making it easy for anyone to visit.
History and Origin of Bukgosa
The exact founding date of Bukgosa Temple is unknown, but various historical records suggest that it was founded between the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods.
Records in the 18th-century 『Yeojidoseo』, 『Garamgo』, and 『Beomugo』 mention "5 li north of Muju-bu," and the 『Jeokseongji』 in 1898 introduces it as "a temple with about 700 years of history located on Mt. Hyangro, formerly known as Gyeongwol Temple."
The style of the three-story stone pagoda remaining in the temple also reflects the characteristics of the late Goryeo to early Joseon periods.
In addition, a reliquary inscription discovered in 2000 during a survey of sacred cultural properties by the Cultural Affairs Department of the Jogye Order mentions the creation of the Amitabha Buddha statue in 1657, adding to its historical value.
Around the 19th century, it was renamed 'Bukgosa,' and from the 1970s to the 1990s, major buildings such as Geukrakjeon, Chilseonggak, and Sanwangdang were rebuilt, giving it its current appearance.
'Bukgosa' encountered midway along the Mt. Hyangro Trail
Walking along the Mt. Hyangro hiking trail, you will soon see a 'Bukgosa' sign.
I also happened to stop by while taking a walk!
There are old sculptures on the way to the entrance,
It was also fun to imagine what the people of the past had carefully created.
I really liked the small but neat atmosphere.
On one side of the temple,
There is also a guide sign for the origin of Bukgosa and Jeollabuk-do Tangible Cultural Heritage,
You can feel the cultural and historical value of this place once again.
The serene scenery of Bukgosa
Although not very large,
It has all the spaces that a temple should have, so you can feel a quiet and cozy atmosphere.
I visited around lunchtime, so I didn't see any monks,
I carefully looked inside through the slightly open Dharma Hall door.
It was a simple but deeply energetic space.
A short stop course recommended when traveling to Muju!
If you come to Muju and take a walk or hike on Mt. Hyangro,
I recommend stopping by Bukgosa in the middle to look around the tangible cultural heritage and feel the quiet temple atmosphere.
It's close to the city center, so it's easy to visit,
It's a place where you can feel healed even if you stay for a short time!
This concludes my visit to Bukgosa!
