Hello! Today, I would like to introduce a special place in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do, where history, culture, and the daily lives of residents coexist: Myeoncheon Eupseong (면천읍성).
If you are a traveler who wants to feel living history rather than visit a man-made tourist spot, pay attention to this place!
Centered around Myeoncheon Eupseong, we will explore the charm of a one-day itinerary that includes Gunjajeong, a natural monument ginkgo tree, and Myeoncheon Warehouse.
▲ Myeoncheon Eupseong
Myeoncheon Eupseong is a typical flatland fortress built in the early Joseon period (21st year of King Sejong, 1439) that surrounds the center of Myeoncheon-myeon in Dangjin. This fortress served both military defense and as a local administrative center.
The fortress walls are approximately 1,200 meters in circumference, constructed with carefully hewn natural stones. Currently, the western and southern walls are relatively well-preserved, and the eastern gate, 'Hyewhamun,' remains intact.
Inscriptions such as 'Gimi Year (己未年)' carved into the stones provide important data for the study of Joseon-era fortifications. Walking along the fortress path offers a unique experience of tranquility that is exclusive to Myeoncheon Eupseong.
▲ The Village Inside the Fortress
The greatest charm of Myeoncheon Eupseong is that residents still live here today. Unlike other fortresses that have been thoroughly developed as tourist sites, this place encompasses an actual village, allowing history and daily life to coexist naturally.
▲ Myeoncheon Eupseong Village
The quaint and warm village scenery unfolding between the fortress walls and old buildings creates a unique atmosphere where the past and present flow together seamlessly. As you walk through this village, you can directly feel that the historical space is still alive.
▲ Scene of Walking in the Fortress
Even during my visit on a weekday afternoon, I noticed several groups of people coming to explore the fortress. Friends were taking beautiful photos against the backdrop of the walls, and families were leisurely strolling along the fortress path, enjoying their time together.
▲ Myeoncheon Eupseong
This suggests that Myeoncheon Eupseong has established itself not just as a relic of the past but as a space for relaxation and culture for people living in the present.
The sounds of daily life within the fortress and the laughter from outside harmoniously blend in Myeoncheon Eupseong.
▲ Ginkgo Tree
In the Myeoncheon Eupseong village, two ancient ginkgo trees, over 1,100 years old, stand majestically. These trees are not merely old remnants but symbolize the history and spirit of the Myeoncheon region.
This ginkgo tree is deeply connected to the miraculous healing legend of General Bok Jikyeom, a founding hero of Goryeo. When the general fell gravely ill, his daughter, Yeongrang, received a revelation from the mountain spirit. Following the revelation, she brewed a wine using azaleas from Amisan Mountain and water from a spring, and planted this ginkgo tree in front of their house. Miraculously, the general recovered, which is the origin of Myeoncheon Duguenju and this ginkgo tree.

Currently, this ginkgo tree is designated as Natural Monument No. 551 and is under strict protection. The villagers regard this ginkgo tree not just as a tree but as a sacred tree, and they continue the tradition of holding a ritual every year on the first full moon of the lunar calendar to pray for the village's peace and well-being.
▲ Gunjajeong
Myeoncheon Eupseong also features Gunjajeong, a beautiful pavilion representing the history and culture of Myeoncheon. Built on the pond Gunjaji, it boasts stunning surroundings.
The history of Gunjaji dates back to the Goryeo Dynasty during the reign of King Chungnyeol, when the governor Kwak Chung-ryeong created the pond and planted lotus flowers. Throughout the Joseon period, Gunjajeong served as a central space in Myeoncheon and gained historical and cultural significance during the Japanese occupation and modern times.
Gunjajeong has long been a place of cultural exchange among scholars, and its beautiful scenery has inspired many literary works. Now designated as a cultural heritage site, it offers a serene beauty to visitors of the fortress, thanks to the harmonious landscape of the pond and pavilion.
▲ Sunset Scene at Myeoncheon Eupseong
Myeoncheon Eupseong is particularly famous for its beautiful scenery at sunset. Climbing up to the western wall, you can witness a fantastic scene of the sunset casting over the peaceful fields beyond the fortress. The red-hued walls and sky provide a perfect backdrop for memorable photos.
▲ Myeoncheon Warehouse
Located within walking distance from the fortress, Myeoncheon Warehouse is a unique cultural space and café transformed from an old agricultural cooperative warehouse. The rustic texture of the old building blends with modern design, creating a vintage and emotional atmosphere. It is an ideal spot to take a break and experience culture after exploring the history.
The area around Myeoncheon Eupseong is an important historical site from the early Joseon period, embodying a thousand-year-old legend and the daily lives of residents, along with the scholarly culture that continues to thrive. Walking along the fortress path and through the village offers a living history exploration course, allowing you to appreciate the solid fortification techniques of the early Joseon and the peaceful scenery surrounding it.
I highly recommend experiencing the deep charm of time travel at Myeoncheon Eupseong in Dangjin!
