Must-Visit Place in Goesan-gun

Chilseong Village, Goesan

Chilseong Village in Goesan-gun, Chungbuk, was once a small village where markets and people thrived together. Over time, it gradually lost its vitality and became quiet. However, recently, a new breath of life has begun to flow into this place. This is because the 'Chilseong Village Alley Museum Street Project,' promoted by Goesan-gun, has transformed the old alleys into spaces that tell stories again.

In 2023, Goesan-gun went beyond simply reorganizing the old market alleys and proceeded with a project to create the entire alley like a giant museum. With special grants and local expenses invested, building facade maintenance, space remodeling, and street environment improvements were carried out simultaneously. The goal was to create a street where people could naturally experience the history of the village as they came and went.

Walking along the alley, you can see traces of the past left in various places, such as old signboards and old building walls. In between, young entrepreneurs have moved in and are running small workshops, cafes, and lifestyle shops, establishing a new living culture. The natural blend of the past and present was impressive.

Design elements with a retro vibe have been applied to the street, and experience spaces have been created for visitors to participate in. Exhibitions, performances, flea markets, photo zones, and programs are held every season, adding vitality to the alley. Thanks to this, Chilseong Village Alley Museum Street is being reborn not just as a tourist attraction but as a 'living culture street with the nostalgia of the past.'

While walking through the alley, I also came across the 'Chilseong Farmers' agricultural association store. Chilseong Farmers is an association that produces and sells local organic and eco-friendly agricultural products, and they cultivate various items by utilizing the mountainous terrain of Goesan. It is an organization that works for the sustainability of local agriculture, so it was a place that went well with the character of the Alley Museum Street.

The time I visited was after sunset, so most of the workshops and shops were closed, but the restaurants were open. There were mainly Korean restaurants, which were good for a hearty meal, and in particular, a store called 'Friends' House' caught my eye because it uses eco-friendly rice and is designated as a good price business. It was a place I definitely wanted to visit next time.

At the end of the alley, a scene unfolded where the floor lights changed color and sparkled. The name Chilseong Village is said to have originated from the fact that there were seven rocks resembling the Big Dipper in this area in the past. Although the rocks are no longer there, the village is actively utilizing the beautiful image of 'Chilseong' as a design element to revive it.

A mural symbolizing this place was also located in the alley. It was a mural that harmoniously depicted the famous attractions of Goesan, based on Van Gogh's 'Starry Night.' Places representing Chilseong-myeon, such as Yeonhacheop Cloud Bridge, Sanmakyi Old Road, and the ancient Gagyonsa Temple, were included, so the identity of the region was immediately apparent.

It was a street where the atmosphere of day and night would be completely different, but I visited after sunset and was able to fully feel the atmosphere of the alley created by the soft lighting. Next time, I would like to visit again during the day and enjoy various experiences. Chilseong Village Alley Museum Street, where traces of the past and present culture coexist, was a space that showed the new vitality of the region.
