A Trip to Goesan: Discovering the Scenic Wonpung Reservoir

Goesan is a county filled with beautiful places to visit, and one of its gems is the Wonpung Reservoir.
The autumn foliage trail around Wonpung Reservoir, nestled at the foot of Mt. Joryeongsan (1,017m), offers stunning scenery in all seasons with its lush pine forests and bizarre rock formations. Situated on the border between Goesan's Yeonpung and Mungyeong's Mungyeong-eup, Mt. Joryeongsan is part of the Sobaek Mountain Range, gradually descending after passing Taebaeksan, Sobaeksan, and Woraksan.
Goesan is home to Joryeongsan Natural Recreation Forest, and you can enjoy the famous mountains along the Ewharyeong and Yeonpung Saejae trails. Another must-visit spot is Wonpung Reservoir.
Wonpung Reservoir is located at the edge of Suokjeong Tourist Area, where Suok Falls is situated. A deck path has been built along the embankment at the top of the hill where Suok Falls begins, offering a view of Mt. Joryeongsan straight ahead.
Wonpung Reservoir is an artificial reservoir constructed in 1992 for agricultural water supply. The embankment is 184m long and 18.2m high. Below the embankment is Suok Falls, and in front, you can see the bizarre rock formations of Mt. Joryeongsan. Wonpung Reservoir has a 2.4km circular trail, allowing you to enjoy the beautiful mountains of Goesan with a light walk. The scenery changes with the seasons, offering a new view each time you visit.
In the deepening autumn, Wonpung Reservoir is painted with various colors at different sections and heights. The gray maple trees amidst the bizarre rocks, the red foliage of the metasequoia trees, the bare branches that have already shed their leaves, and the green areas of the pine groves are all harmonized. Below the embankment, reeds bloom, creating a shimmering silver wave. Regardless of the season, two iconic views stand out: Sinseonbong and Mapaebong peaks. The two ridges are reflected on the water surface, and if you time it right, you can also see the shimmering sunlight.
The deck path that starts at the end of the embankment, where you can enjoy the scenic beauty of Mt. Joryeongsan, is a foliage trail filled with autumn scenery. It contrasts with the green areas of the pine groves in front. Deciduous forests turn brown, creating a foliage tunnel. Red and brown foliage intersect, and dry fallen leaves roll on the ground.
Wonpung Reservoir has abundant water and is very clear. Sunlight shimmers and sparkles on the calm surface. The Wonpung Reservoir trail has an observatory in the center of the deck, allowing you to enjoy the scenery, and there are swings and benches in various places, making it ideal for enjoying the beautiful scenery while walking and stopping.
The entire 2.4km section, connected to the road, hillside, embankment, and Suokjeong Garden, is flat, making it easy for people of all ages to walk comfortably. It is the easiest course to enjoy the scenic beauty of Mt. Joryeongsan in Yeonpung-myeon, Goesan-gun, where mountains and water are in harmony.
The path that leads to the wide waterfront becomes more colorful as it gets closer to Suokjeong Garden, with reeds, metasequoia trees, maple trees, and unknown aquatic plants all harmonizing. This section was where the stream that started from Joryeongsan Natural Recreation Forest led to Wonpung Reservoir. It feels like seeing an ecological forest where various plants and animals live.
During a visit in midsummer, the Suokjeong water park, which was crowded with many families, is now covered with fallen leaves. It feels like just yesterday that we were cooling off in the splashing water, but now we are looking forward to next summer after passing through winter. Wonpung Reservoir is also preparing for winter while sending off autumn. Bare branches revealed their silver appearance between the red foliage.
In November, Wonpung Reservoir boasts colorful foliage between the evergreen pine groves and gray rocky cliffs. It was the best autumn trekking to enjoy the foliage. As winter deepens, Wonpung Reservoir is expected to transform once again. When the ice freezes thick, ice fishing is also possible.
Wonpung Reservoir offers different ways to enjoy it depending on the season, with the bizarre rocks of Mt. Joryeongsan in the background. Following the best foliage, Suok Falls forms an ice wall in winter, and Wonpung Reservoir also freezes, promising a winter wonderland.
