A Special New Year Journey in Dangjin

As the Lunar New Year approaches, how about a unique trip to Dangjin?
Let me introduce you to three travel spots in Dangjin to celebrate the New Year.
The highlights include Waemok Village Beach, a local seafood restaurant specializing in crab stew, and the historic Sinamsa Temple, home to the Golden Buddha (Treasure No. 987).
Waemok Village Beach is a renowned spot for sunrise views over the West Sea, located in Seokmun-myeon, Dangjin.
Its beautiful coastal scenery and unique geography make it a favorite among travelers.
The beach stretches eastward, allowing visitors to witness both the sunrise and sunset from the same location.
Named after the shape of a heron's neck, Waemok Village Beach features a large heron sculpture at its entrance.
Despite being on the West Sea, the beach offers stunning sunrise views, instilling a sense of renewal and hope for the New Year.
In addition to its breathtaking sunrises, the beach also has sandy shores and tidal flats, perfect for swimming, beach walks, and fishing, showcasing the unique marine landscape of the West Sea.
Now, let's talk about local cuisine.
Have you heard of "Gae-guk-ji"? It's a traditional dish from the West Coast region, including Seosan, Taean, and Dangjin.
This spicy crab stew is primarily made with blue crabs and aged kimchi.
The restaurant I recommend, Ggotgae and Ggotgae House, is conveniently located right in front of Waemok Village Beach.
The term "guk-ji" is a local dialect meaning soup or stew, so the name reflects its essence perfectly.
I recommend trying this dish after enjoying the New Year sunrise, as it warms both the body and soul.
This crab stew restaurant has been featured in various media and is one of my personal favorites in Dangjin.
Enjoy a delightful culinary experience with the spicy crab stew and delicious crab and shrimp dishes.
Next, we have Sinamsa Temple, where the Golden Buddha (Treasure No. 987) is enshrined.
Founded during the Goryeo Dynasty by Lady Shin of Guye, the temple was built to pray for her husband's rebirth in paradise.
Currently, the temple houses the Golden Buddha, dating back to the early 14th century.
Sinamsa is part of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and was initially known as Gu-ryongsa before being renamed in 1920.
The temple features several structures, including the main hall and the mountain spirit shrine, with the main hall restored in the late 19th century.
The Golden Buddha underwent preservation work with funding from the Korean Heritage Administration and was reopened to the public in January 2025.
Visitors can now see this magnificent statue in all its glory.
After viewing the Golden Buddha, you can enjoy the warm winter sunshine shining on the stone statue in front of Sinamsa.
Wishing for the safety and well-being of loved ones while admiring the majestic Golden Buddha is a wonderful way to start the New Year.
This concludes the introduction to the New Year wish journey in Dangjin.
