A Tranquil Temple at the Foot of Chilkapsan
Located at the foot of Mount Chilkapsan in Cheongyang, Jangoksa Temple offers a unique atmosphere from the moment you arrive. Rather than being a lavishly decorated temple, it exudes a sense of tranquility and history that naturally calms the mind.
Positioned on the western side of Chilkapsan Provincial Park, the temple's layout allows for a seamless transition to the hiking trails afterward. It's perfect for a leisurely stroll or for those who are ready to embark on a more serious hike.
History Rooted in the Silla Dynasty
Jangoksa Temple is a traditional temple believed to have been founded by the monk Bojo in the 12th year of King Munseong of Silla, in 850 AD. While not all historical details have been preserved, traces of its long history are evident throughout the site.
The Unique Upper and Lower Daeungjeon
What makes this place particularly special is the unique structure of the main hall, which is divided into two sections: the upper and lower Daeungjeon. This layout is rare in typical temples, prompting visitors to take their time exploring.
The upper Daeungjeon captures attention from the moment you step inside. Instead of wooden flooring, square bricks are laid down, creating a striking texture and atmosphere. This detail contributes to the temple's unique charm, making it feel both ancient and unfamiliar.
The lower Daeungjeon features a gabled roof shaped like a personβs silhouette. Although small, the building is beautifully constructed with multiple layers of support beams, giving it a neat and elegant appearance. Its compact size invites closer inspection and contemplation.
Medicine Buddha and Quiet Prayer
Each Daeungjeon houses a statue of the Medicine Buddha, known for its reputed powers to heal incurable diseases. This draws visitors and worshippers from all over the country, and witnessing the quiet prayers offered here was a moving experience. Photography is not allowed in the prayer area, which made the moment feel even more memorable.
Participating in the Templeβs Legacy
Currently, Jangoksa Temple is also accepting donations for roof tiles, priced at 10,000 KRW each. Though a small contribution, it feels meaningful to help sustain the temple's legacy. This aspect of participation adds to the temple's appeal, allowing visitors to engage more deeply rather than just observing.
A Starting Point for Reflection and Nature Walks
Jangoksa Temple is a place where tranquility prevails over grandeur, making it ideal for those who prefer a slow, reflective journey rather than a quick tourist stop. As the starting point for the Chilkapsan Provincial Park trails, the transition from temple exploration to nature walks is delightful.
Why not light a candle at Jangoksa Temple to make a wish for the New Year? I felt that experiencing the temple in different seasons would offer a completely different atmosphere, and I am eager to return in another season. I highly recommend Jangoksa Temple for anyone seeking a peaceful getaway or a moment of reflection.
