If you're planning a trip to Jincheon, Chungbuk, there's a special place you should definitely visit: the birthplace of independence activist Lee Sang-seol. It's a living history destination where you can feel the life and spirit of a man who dedicated his life to the independence of Korea.
Lee Sang-seol (1870–1917) was born in Jincheon and began his career as a government official after passing the civil service examination in 1894. However, as the Japanese invasion intensified, he abandoned his comfortable life and embarked on the path of the anti-Japanese movement. In 1907, under the secret order of Emperor Gojong, he was dispatched as a special envoy to the Hague Peace Conference to inform the world of the injustice of Japan's encroachment on Korean sovereignty. Although he did not achieve his goal, his unwavering sense of duty remains in our history.
Afterward, he established schools in Manchuria and the Maritime Province of Siberia, educating young people and planting the seeds of independence. He eventually passed away from illness in 1917 in Ussuriysk, Maritime Province, Russia. In accordance with his will, "Do not bury my remains in my homeland," his ashes were scattered in the Solbin River. His life, marked by the unfulfilled desire to reclaim his country, continues to resonate deeply.
Next to Lee Sang-seol's birthplace is Sungyeolsa Shrine. Sungyeolsa is a shrine dedicated to the spirit tablet of independence activist Lee Sang-seol, created to honor his patriotism and achievements and pass them on to future generations. It was first built in Gyoseong-ri, Jincheon-eup, in 1972, and then moved and restored next to Lee Sang-seol's birthplace in 1997, taking its current form. In front of the shrine, there is a statue of Lee Sang-seol, a monument marking the site, and a stele commemorating his virtues, allowing visitors to feel his footsteps more closely.
Lee Sang-seol's birthplace is located at 10, Lee Sangseol an-gil, Jincheon-eup, Jincheon-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. It was designated as Chungcheongbuk-do Monument on March 31, 1987, and is characterized by its well-preserved traditional thatched-roof house. The house, consisting of the main building and an outhouse, has a straight-line floor plan with five bays in the front and two bays on the side.
The roof is thatched, and the walls are finished with mud and wood, showing the simple appearance of commoner's houses at the time. Although not large in size, reflecting on the long years felt in the yard and throughout the house makes you realize that it is a place imbued with history.
Although it was a brief visit, the values learned there conveyed a greater resonance to us who live today. If you travel to Jincheon, be sure to visit these two places together and deeply engrave in your heart the history to be remembered and the future to be protected. Above all, if you visit with children, it will be an invaluable place for historical education, where you can hear vivid stories in the space where he actually lived, rather than just a figure in a textbook. If you also visit the Lee Sang-seol Memorial Hall next door, you can further deepen the resonance felt at the birthplace and Sungyeolsa Shrine, and have time to view Lee Sang-seol's life and achievements at a glance.
