A Delightful Meal at Jincheon Gun's Local Restaurant: Gongju Spicy Kalguksu

Introducing Gongju Spicy Kalguksu, a local restaurant in Jincheon Gun where you can enjoy a hearty meal at a reasonable price. Located about a 5-minute drive from the county office in Eumnae-ri, this place is designated as a good price establishment by the government and local authorities, and it's a favorite among locals. It's particularly inviting during the cold season.
The restaurant has a spacious parking lot right in front, making it convenient for guests. However, be aware that parking can be a bit challenging during lunchtime due to its popularity.
Before entering, you can spot the good price establishment sign and the exemplary restaurant plaque attached to the front of the shop. The good price establishments have a uniform blue sign at the entrance, so you can easily check before going in.
When I visited during lunch, it was quite crowded, but fortunately, the interior is spacious with plenty of tables, so I didn't have to wait. Even around 1 PM, the restaurant was clearly a popular local spot.
Looking at the menu, the plain white kalguksu is only 6,500 won, while the signature spicy kalguksu is just 7,000 won, making it quite affordable. The prices are reasonable, and they also offer handmade dumplings for 8,000 won and king dumplings for 4,000 won, along with dishes like chicken doritang and shrimp tempura.
Once seated, they provided some perilla leaves and kimchi, while other sides like bean sprouts and pickled radish are self-serve, allowing you to take as much as you want. The side dishes were fresh and didn't have an old taste, so I ended up refilling them twice. The pickled radish was also crisp and delightful.
I managed to capture some photos of the kalguksu preparation process in the kitchen while fetching side dishes. Even with a sudden influx of customers during lunch, the owner was quick, and the kalguksu was prepared promptly.
Having visited Jincheon Gun's good price establishments frequently, I had previously tried the kalguksu here, so this time, I opted for the handmade dumplings. They take about 15 to 30 minutes to prepare since they are hand-pulled, so it's a good idea to call ahead. When I ordered, they came out in just under 15 minutes.
The dumplings were generously filled in a rich, spicy broth. Although they appeared rustic, their chewy texture was exceptional, making for a truly enjoyable meal. It was a fulfilling dish that lifted my spirits.
There were also soft potatoes in the broth, which balanced the spiciness and added a harmonious flavor. The chewy dumplings paired perfectly with the tender potatoes, making it a hearty winter meal.
While slightly spicy, the dumplings had a savory flavor that was somewhat addictive. At the reasonable price of 8,000 won, the generous portion and great taste make me want to return for more.
The perilla leaves served alongside had a slightly bitter yet fragrant taste that helped neutralize the heat, providing a refreshing crunch when enjoyed with the hot broth.
I had a truly satisfying experience at Gongju Spicy Kalguksu, a local gem in Jincheon Gun. With its popularity among locals and the friendly owner, I highly recommend stopping by for a meal when visiting the area!
