I recently had the pleasure of trying Makguksu, a buckwheat noodle dish, at Sigol Makguksu, a restaurant recognized as an exemplary establishment located in Jincheon-gun. Exemplary restaurants are selected by local governments for their superior hygiene, taste, service, and reasonable prices. I'd like to share my detailed dining experience from my visit.
Sigol Makguksu's Jincheon branch is conveniently located approximately 2.4km from the Jincheon-gun Office, a short 3-4 minute drive. Its proximity to the city center is a definite plus.
The restaurant offers ample parking space right in front, making it easily accessible and convenient for those arriving by car.
True to its name, which translates to "Countryside Makguksu," the surrounding scenery evoked a charming and rustic feel. Despite being close to the city, the peaceful countryside ambiance was quite enjoyable.
Stepping inside, I was surprised by how spacious the interior was, even more so than the exterior suggested. It seemed suitable for large groups or families dining together.
The interior was decorated with witty neon signs, which created a bright and welcoming atmosphere.
The main menu features Mul Makguksu (water-based) and Bibim Makguksu (spicy mixed), with the option to upsize for an additional 2,000 won. Side dishes include buckwheat dumplings, buckwheat kimchi pancakes, buckwheat pancakes, and boiled pork, offering a variety of choices.
After ordering, you can help yourself to buckwheat tea. Small kettles are provided, allowing you to pour a moderate amount. The warm and nutty buckwheat tea is especially comforting on cooler days.
I also ordered the buckwheat dumplings as a side dish to enjoy with my Makguksu. The dumplings arrived first, and I eagerly tried them. Priced at 7,000 won, the order included six large buckwheat dumplings.
These weren't just ordinary dumplings; they were buckwheat dumplings, and their nutty, savory, and healthy qualities were immediately apparent. They paired perfectly with the Makguksu, complementing the dish nicely.
The buckwheat skin had a delightful nutty aroma and a slightly chewy texture. The flavor was clean and not overpowering, making them incredibly delicious. Buckwheat is known to be rich in rutin, which is beneficial for blood vessel health. It also feels lighter on the stomach compared to wheat flour with high gluten content.
Shortly after enjoying the dumplings, my Mul Makguksu arrived. This is one of the signature dishes at Sigol Makguksu, and it looked incredibly appetizing!
The combination of soft and savory buckwheat noodles, made with a high buckwheat content, and the clear, refreshing broth was simply divine. The balance between the noodles and broth was perfect, creating a savory and non-stimulating flavor that kept me wanting more.
The weather was still pleasant, like early autumn, making the cool and savory buckwheat Makguksu a perfect choice. The generous serving of fresh vegetables made it a healthy and satisfying meal!
The restaurant was spacious and clean, creating a pleasant atmosphere. The Makguksu and dumplings were delicious and well-prepared, reinforcing the restaurant's reputation as an exemplary establishment. If you're looking for a Makguksu restaurant that's easily accessible from the city, I highly recommend visiting Sigol Makguksu.
