Exploring the Hidden Gem of Jukdo Island

▲ Jukdo Island (the island behind the boat)
Spring has fully arrived, making it the perfect time for travel.
Today, I visited Jukdo Island, a treasure island located in Hongseong County. Let me share various aspects of this beautiful place, from the boat ride to enjoying the island itself.
◆ Getting to Jukdo
▲ Energy Self-Sufficient Island Jukdo
Jukdo Island (竹島) is a small island located in the Garolim Bay, home to about 70 residents. The island got its name because of the abundant bamboo that grows around it.
In 2015, Chungcheongnam-do and Hanwha Group collaborated to develop it into an 'energy self-sufficient island' the following year.
Since becoming known for its beauty, ferry services began in 2018 for the convenience of the island's residents, and now it is famous for its pristine waters and surrounding forest trails.
▲ Boarding the Ferry at Namdang Port
The distance from Namdang Port to Jukdo is approximately 3.7 km, with a boarding time of about 10 to 15 minutes, accommodating 176 passengers (including 4 crew members).
Free parking is available at Namdang Port, so just check the address for Hongju Shipping to find it.
▲ Ferry Schedule
Please note that the schedule differs between weekdays and weekends. Reservations are required for groups of 20 or more, while individual travelers must fill out a boarding ticket at the local ticket office.
▲ Seagulls
Seagulls have begun to follow the ferry, trained by the smell of snacks. However, please refrain from feeding them processed snacks, as it may lead to health issues for the birds and disrupt the ecosystem.
◆ Discovering the Jukdo Course
▲ Information Board on Jukdo
As we approach Jukdo, let’s familiarize ourselves with the course for enjoying the island.
* Jukdo Pier ⇒ Viewpoint 1 (Ompang Island Viewpoint, Yongnan Dombong, Daetnip Sound Path, Wave Sound Path) ⇒ Viewpoint 3 (Damgaebi Viewpoint) ⇒ Island Village Center (Camping area, convenience store, etc.) ⇒ Viewpoint 2 (Dongbaji Viewpoint, Jukdo Observation Deck Road) ⇒ Jukdo Pier
Exploring the island will cover about 4 km, and if you dine at a restaurant on Jukdo, it will take around 3 hours, so check the ferry return schedule to plan your visit.
◆ Enjoying Jukdo
The ferry departs from Namdang Port and drops us off at Jukdo Pier in about 10 minutes.
We head towards Viewpoint 1 (Ompang Island Viewpoint).
The walking trail around Jukdo features poems related to Jukdo from 'Hongju Literature' at every step.
▲ Viewpoint 1 (Ompang Island Viewpoint)
After reading two poems for about 15 minutes, we arrive at Viewpoint 1, where we are greeted by Han Yong-un, a notable figure from Hongseong.
This viewpoint, also known as Ompang Island Viewpoint, has a legend that the islands behind were cut by a dragon's tail as it ascended to the sky.
▲ Bamboo Forest Path
The island is covered with bamboo, and as we walk along the Daetnip Sound Path, the sound of the wind rustling the bamboo accompanies us.
▲ Village Scenery
Eight years ago, when I first visited, the murals were vibrant, but now they blend with the blue barley fields.
As we turn back to head towards Viewpoint 3, we notice the beautiful scenery surrounding us.
▲ Viewpoint 3 (Damgaebi Viewpoint) Entrance
This viewpoint, known for its historical significance, captivates visitors with its hidden treasures.
As we enter, we are welcomed by General Kim Jwa-jin, a prominent figure from Hongseong.
We are halfway through our journey, and every resting spot offers breathtaking views.
As we descend from Viewpoint 3, we see a campsite perfect for campers and a helicopter landing area for emergencies.
Additionally, there is a 1-night, 2-day accommodation package available for those who wish to stay longer.
Jukdo is known for its renewable energy power plant, which has contributed to its recognition as an energy self-sufficient island.
We head towards Viewpoint 2, known for its stunning views of the clean sea.
Viewpoint 2, or Dongbaji Viewpoint, faces Namdang Port and is a great spot for sunrise.
The newly opened Jukdo Observation Deck Road is also a must-visit.
▲ Jukdo Pier View
The views from the deck road are truly spectacular.
As we conclude our journey, every resting spot on Jukdo feels like a beautiful frame.
With the arrival of spring, I highly recommend visiting Jukdo Island!
