Enjoy a Relaxing Chuseok Holiday with Free Highway Tolls and More!

This year’s long Chuseok holiday has many people traveling either to their hometowns or abroad, while others are choosing nearby stays and local trips. With the extended break, transportation planning becomes especially important.
To support smoother travel, the government has prepared various measures including highway toll exemptions, increased public transportation, and free nationwide public parking. Here’s a clear overview to help you plan a more relaxed and efficient Chuseok holiday.
Highway Toll Exemptions During Chuseok
According to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, all vehicles using highways from October 4 to October 7 are exempt from tolls.
For Hi-Pass lanes, tolls are automatically waived. Vehicles using general lanes should follow on-site instructions at toll booths for toll-free passage.
The Korea Expressway Corporation expects heavy congestion for homebound traffic on the afternoons and evenings of October 4 and 5, while return traffic to cities is expected to peak on the afternoon of October 7.
To avoid congestion, early departures between 3 and 5 AM or late-night travel are recommended. Using alternative routes such as the Jungbu Expressway instead of only the Gyeongbu Expressway can also help reduce travel time.
Expanded Public Transportation Services
During the Chuseok special transportation period from October 2 to October 12, additional KTX and SRT trains, as well as express and intercity buses departing from Seoul, will be in operation.
These measures allow an average of 18,000 additional passengers per day to travel, helping to ease the burden of long-distance movement during peak holiday times.
In addition, bus-only lane operating hours on the Gyeongbu Expressway have been extended by three hours compared to normal schedules, allowing use until 1 AM.
Free Nationwide Public Parking
Throughout the Chuseok holiday period, public parking lots nationwide will be open free of charge.
Drivers can check real-time parking availability through platforms such as Shared Nuri, Naver Map, Kakao Map, and T Map to plan parking more efficiently.
Some regions are also operating customized transportation measures, including extended late-night city bus services and temporary shuttle buses for cemetery visits.
Additional Holiday Benefits Beyond Transportation
Beyond transportation support, several cultural facilities such as national heritage sites, national arboretums, and art museums will be open either free of charge or at discounted rates during the holiday.
These benefits make it easier to enjoy meaningful leisure activities, whether you are traveling far, staying nearby, or simply exploring your local area.
Wishing You a Relaxing and Fulfilling Chuseok
Whether you are heading to your hometown, traveling abroad, or enjoying a quiet staycation, careful planning can make your Chuseok holiday far more comfortable.
With toll-free highways, expanded transportation options, and free parking, this year’s holiday is designed to be easier on travelers. I hope everyone enjoys a safe, pleasant, and rewarding Chuseok holiday.
