Architectural Journeys - Space Travelers

Episode 3.

Space Travelers Transform into the 'Nice and Good Spot Expedition Team'

Unveiling the Secrets of Seongsu-dong, a Neighborhood Known for Its Charm!

Seongsu-dong, a long and flat land, was incorporated into Seoul in 1949 due to a major administrative reorganization.

In the Joseon Dynasty, it was a plain used for raising horses. During the Japanese colonial period, it was a racetrack. Before the creation of Seoul Forest, it was also used as a golf course.

Seongsu-dong developed into a manufacturing hub in the 1960s (designated as a semi-industrial area).

New York's SoHo also transformed from a factory district into a fashion mecca.

Located in the southern part of Seongsu Station is Yeonmujang-gil Road.

It is said that the name comes from the fact that it was once a Yeonmujang (a place for practicing martial arts).

In the mid-Joseon period, Wangsimni was a royal hunting ground used to train horses.

When training the king's horses, there were various flags, including the 'dukgi,' a flag to pray for victory.

It is said that 'Dukdo,' the place where the 'dukgi' was planted, is now 'Ttukseom.'

1. Seongsu-dong

(Tamburins Seongsu Flagship Store + Dior Seongsu)

It is said to have a similar feel to the Apple Store located in Manhattan, New York.

2. Seongsu, Korea's Brooklyn (Daelim Warehouse, Seongsu Yeonbang)

First,

Seongsu-dong Daelim Warehouse Gallery

The building, which was a rice mill in the 1970s,

Since 2011, it has been used for fashion shows of famous brands such as Chanel.

A gallery cafe, pop-up store, performance venue, etc.

Daelim Warehouse, the beginning of a trendy spot, beautifully renovated from a factory.

The Tate Modern, a modern art museum located in London, England,

It is said to have been remodeled from the former Bankside Power Station.

New York's High Line Park is also a park created by remodeling a formerly abandoned commercial railway.

This is called upcycling, which revives spaces and gives them new life.

Seongsu, called Korea's Brooklyn, with various factories being renovated.

Next is

Seongsu Yeonbang

A chemical factory built in the 1970s,

A place that was renovated and reborn in 2017.

Two separate buildings connected by a bridge into one space.

The space between the two buildings was a parking lot, but now it has been transformed into a garden.

Episode 4.

In Search of Nice and Good Spots with Um Ji-yoon & Jo Jin-se to Haebangchon!

Haebangchon with many stairs and slopes

A special road that only people can walk on

So the key is that you can see everything from Bukhansan Mountain to Gwanaksan Mountain.

Haebangchon. The area around Yongsan 2-ga and part of Huam-dong.

A village that was formed after 1945, when displaced people who had lost their homes like war refugees settled down.

It was called 'Haebangchon' because it was created right after liberation.

And,

Japan built shrines in a row on Namsan Mountain, where the entire Hanyang could be seen at a glance at the time.

Joseon Shrine on Namsan (currently the Ahn Jung-geun Memorial Hall built in its place)

Gyeongseong Shrine right next to it

Finally, the stone staircase leading to the Gyeongseong Gokoku Shrine (remains as the current 108 Sky Stairs, which is also said to be the dividing point between Huam-dong and Haebangchon).

1. Comfort Seoul

Originally a cliff.

Two roads (Sowol-ro and Duteopbawi-ro) that were disconnected due to the cliff

It has become a building that connects the two roads.

It is said to be a rare case of realizing the public good through private property.

2. Shinheung Market + Cloud

Shinheung Market, built on a narrow site because the market could not be built due to the narrow site.

The market is surrounded by buildings and has four entrances, making it easy to enter from any location.

Cloud, a market arcade

The current Cloud roof was installed over the former Shinheung Market, which was originally covered with asbestos slate.
