The Last Moon Village: Baeksamaeul's Farewell and Transformation

Beautiful Moon Halo in Norway
The moon rising over Seoul…
Seoul's moon village, with its picturesque moon halo, is a place where beautiful affection gathers.
Although life was poor, the taste of human life permeated every alley.
The flower of affection will hang like an eternal longing as a moonbow over the distant sky of the moon village.
Baeksamaeul is located at 104 Junggye-dong, Nowon-gu, at the foot of Mt. Bulam in the northeast of Seoul.
In 1968, it was a place provided by the government to relocate people living in shantytowns such as Cheonggyecheon due to development.

Baeksamaeul in Nowon-gu, known as the last moon village in Seoul, is disappearing into history.
Demolition has begun as redevelopment projects are in full swing.
Reporter Kim Seung-hee reports.
Reporter:
Cracks are everywhere in the houses, and they look as if they will collapse at any moment.
This is Baeksamaeul, located below Mt. Bulam.
It was created in the late 1960s by evictees who were pushed out during the urban development process in Seoul.
Residents who have lived there for over 20 years recall nearly having accidents due to the poor environment.
Ahn Tae-min / Resident of Baeksamaeul:
"A burning briquette fell onto the linoleum, and my mother almost caused a fire while sweeping it up."
Baeksamaeul has entered full-scale demolition work this week.
Construction is in full swing everywhere.
It has been 17 years since redevelopment discussions began in 2008.
The process was not easy.
Seven years later, LH abandoned the project, putting it at risk of drifting.
In 2017, the Seoul Housing & Communities Corporation took over as the implementer, accelerating the process, and resident relocation began last year after management disposition approval was passed.
Hwang Jin-sook / Chairperson of the Residents' Representative Council:
"Everyone has moved out, and there are only about 20 households left now. I think they will leave in April or May."
A large complex with up to 35 floors and approximately 3,100 households is scheduled to be built by 2028.
Jang Joo-hyun / Head of the Reconstruction Project Division, Nowon-gu Office:
"We are in the process of changing the maintenance plan to allow general sales residents and rental housing residents to live together in one apartment building, taking into account the opinions of residents."
Seoul's last moon village has begun its transformation into a new residential complex.
