Why is the 'Green Ecology Slow Life Festival' being held?
The last Sunday of every September is 'World Slow City Day,' celebrated by Slow Cities around the world!
Gimhae, designated as a Slow City, is hosting this experiential Slow Life event to mark this special day, embody the philosophy of the Slow City, and create a sustainable local culture together.
From a 4km slow jogging along the Hwapo Stream trail to various ecological mission events, market booths participated by young people and local small business owners, and even a band performance!
You can experience the value of the Slow City with a variety of programs.
What is a Slow City?
A Slow City is an 'international city brand' that pursues a livable and sustainable city.
The movement began in 1999 in Greve in Chianti, Italy, reflecting on the city life centered on speed and efficiency.
It contains the meaning of protecting our region's precious future assets (unique resources, natural environment, traditional industries, local art, and culture) with local residents as the main agents, utilizing them in accordance with the trends of the times, and realizing the improvement of the quality of life of citizens.
Here, 'Slow' means 'direction,' not speed.
Why 'Hwapo Stream Wetland'?
There is a special reason why this festival is being held at Hwapo Stream Wetland.
Hwapo Stream Wetland is the largest river-type back swamp in Korea with well-preserved original form.
It is a region with excellent biodiversity, with the largest number of endangered species and rare plants among domestic wetland protected areas (rivers).
It is a space with high conservation value and ecologically precious.
Thanks to this natural heritage, Gimhae City was officially certified as a Slow City by the International Slow City Federation in 2018.
Recently, it has been recognized as an ecological protection city not only in Korea but also worldwide, with the confirmation of the Ramsar Wetland City certification in 2025.
Hwapo Stream Wetland is the space that best shows the philosophy of Slow City Gimhae and the best place to directly experience a sustainable life with nature.
Walk slowly along the waterway and breathe with nature in this place.
Experience the true spirit of slow life!
