Hello! This is Gimhae Tourism.
With only one month left in the year, many of you may be planning year-end trips!
When traveling in Gimhae, there's one place you can't miss: Bunsan Mountain, a renowned mountain in Gimhae where you can enjoy both healing and scenic beauty.
Today, we'll introduce you to Bunsan Mountain, as well as Bunsanseong Fortress and Haeunsa Temple, both located on the mountain.
Bunsan Mountain is located across Bukbu-dong, Saman-dong, and Hwalcheon-dong in Gimhae City, standing at an altitude of 382m.
Once called 'Bunsan (盆山),' Bunsan Mountain was considered the guardian mountain of Gimhae-bu. Records in the 『Sejong Sillok Jiriji』 indicate that the people of the district regarded it as their guardian mountain, suggesting it has been considered important since early times.
Bunsan Mountain is home to various attractions, including Gimhae Bunsanseong Fortress (Historic Site No. 66) and Haeunsa Temple, drawing many citizens, hikers, and travelers.
Gimhae Bunsanseong Fortress is a stone fortress built on the summit of Bunsan, with a circumference of approximately 900m. It was initially built during the Goryeo Dynasty but was destroyed during the Imjin War. In 1871 (the 8th year of King Gojong), Magistrate Jeong Hyeon-seok rebuilt it into its current form.
The fortress construction follows the *Toemo style, a mainstream style of mountain fortresses during the Three Kingdoms period, suggesting that the initial construction dates back to the Gaya period.
*Toemo style fortress: A fortress that utilizes the mountain's terrain, with the fortress walls encircling the mountain's peak, running almost horizontally along the 7th to 8th ridge lines.
From Bunsanseong Fortress, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Gimhae City, the Gimhae Plain, and the Nakdong River. The flat path along the fortress walls is perfect for walking, making it a popular spot for strolls.
Walking leisurely while enjoying the open scenery can relieve built-up stress.
It's also a famous sunrise and sunset spot, where you can take stunning photos just by sitting on the fortress walls.
The harmony of nature and Gimhae City seen through the fortress walls makes this a must-visit photo spot at Bunsanseong Fortress. Taking a photo here feels like stepping into a framed picture.
How about capturing a precious memory that you can cherish forever, whether alone, with friends, a loved one, or your beloved pet?
Visit Bunsanseong Fortress, where you can enjoy the open scenery during the day, beautiful sunsets in the evening, and stunning night views from the beautifully preserved fortress walls that have stood for ages!
Haeunsa Temple, located at Manjangdae Peak on Bunsan Mountain, was founded by Queen Heo, who came from Ayuta, India, and married King Suro of the ancient Gaya Kingdom, and her brother, Jangyu Hwasang, to thank the Dragon King for calming the waves and ensuring their safe voyage.
The gate leading into Haeunsa Temple's main hall is called 'Buli-mun.' It signifies that truth is not two but one, and it is also called 'Haetal-mun' because one must reach the state of non-duality to advance to the realm of enlightenment.
Upon entering Haeunsa Temple, you'll be greeted by a statue of Potai Hwasang, wearing a benevolent and gentle smile.
Haeunsa Temple has a unique building called 'Daewangjeon,' which cannot be found in other temples.
'Daewang' refers to King Suro, and the hall enshrines portraits of King Suro and Queen Heo, paying them due respect.
Located within Bunsanseong Fortress, it also served as a forward base for repelling Japanese invaders in the past.
Next to Daewangjeon is 'Yeongsanjeon,' the largest Dharma hall in Haeunsa Temple. Here, many people offer three bows with reverence, emptying their minds and taking time to heal.
With Sansingak, which enshrines the mountain spirit, a small pond enshrining the Dragon King, and the Paseok Pagoda and Jeokmyeolbogung, which Queen Heo and Jangyu Hwasang brought from Ayuta, India, said to grant wishes if you circle it three times.
Despite its small size, Haeunsa Temple has inherited historical value and tradition, making it a temple with the finest aspects.
Bunsan Mountain, a must-visit destination in Gimhae with different charms in each season! Take a stroll around Bunsanseong Fortress, a scenic spot from morning to evening, and heal at Haeunsa Temple, where you can feel tranquility and relaxation!
