A Journey to Hamyang: Exploring Choi Chi-won Historical Park and the Wild Ginseng Theme Pavilion

Under a clear blue sky dotted with picturesque white clouds, I ventured to Hamyang, Gyeongsangnam-do. Nestled in the embrace of the Jirisan Mountain range, this region is known for its blend of Confucian spirit and the vitality of wild ginseng. Today, I'd like to share my travel experience centered around the Choi Chi-won Historical Park and the Wild Ginseng Theme Pavilion.
Choi Chi-won Historical Park
Upon entering the park, the grand Hanok pavilion, Goun-ru, immediately captures the eye. The pillars and tiled roof, imbued with the natural scent of wood, exude a serene ambiance, transporting you back to the Silla Dynasty.
Inside the park, a statue of Choi Chi-won, a renowned scholar of the Silla period and often referred to as the 'God of Study,' stands alongside informational panels detailing his achievements. From a young age, he displayed remarkable intelligence, traveling to Tang China at the age of 12 to pursue his studies and earning great fame before returning home. Witnessing his life, one cannot help but be struck by his passion and dedication to learning.
Notably, the park offers a free experience of wearing Silla Dynasty clothing. Elaborate costumes and court attire of the Silla aristocracy are on display, and a try-on program is available. It seems like the perfect opportunity to create wonderful commemorative photos, especially for families with children.
In the Sangnim-gwan hall, you can find miniature toys for kids to assemble.
Climbing to the Goun-ru observation deck offered another delightful experience. The verdant mountains and fields, along with the clouds filling the sky, created a scene reminiscent of an Oriental painting, instantly soothing the soul.
Wild Ginseng Theme Pavilion
Located near the historical park is the Wild Ginseng Theme Pavilion. This exhibition hall is dedicated to Hamyang's renowned wild ginseng culture. From the entrance, the modern glass building sparkles, drawing visitors in.
Inside the exhibition hall, you'll find information about the ecology and history of wild ginseng, as well as a variety of related materials. Standing out above the rest was a wild ginseng estimated to be over 100 years old. Preserved in a transparent container, the ginseng radiated a mystical aura, captivating all who beheld it. According to the description, it was harvested in 2016 from the Namdeogyusan Mountain range in Hamyang.
My trip to Hamyang was a precious opportunity to experience both intellectual depth and the wonders of nature.
At Choi Chi-won Historical Park, I encountered the spirit of Confucian scholars and the culture of Silla,
While at the Wild Ginseng Theme Pavilion, I discovered the value of wild ginseng, shaped by nature.
Although it was a hot summer day, the cool breeze and green scenery brought comfort, and the energy of Hamyang was truly impressive.
I highly recommend these two destinations in Hamyang to anyone looking for a trip that combines history, nature, and hands-on experiences!
