Winter Changes at Haneul Park
Haneul Park, renowned for having the largest cluster of eulalia grass in downtown Seoul, is undergoing exciting changes this winter!
The Seoul city government plans to preserve the eulalia grass until winter, enhancing its natural landscape and increasing its ecological value as a space coexisting with migratory birds.
What Has Changed in Eulalia Management?
What has changed in the management of eulalia at Haneul Park?
Unlike previous years when the grass was cut down in November, the city has decided to leave the eulalia intact until March to May, before new sprouts emerge. This marks the first attempt in 23 years since the park's establishment in 2002.
Although eulalia is a perennial plant, management guidelines indicated that it could die if not removed before spring sprouts in artificially created environments like parks. Thus, cutting has been done in November and December.
Why Preserve the Eulalia Grass?
Why was the decision made to preserve the eulalia?
This decision aims to address citizens' disappointment over the lack of winter attractions after the eulalia festival and to provide a resting and feeding space for migratory birds.
Additionally, enjoy the attractive scenery of Haneul Park with the golden, dried eulalia fields, coexisting with nature in the city!
New Management Approach
How will the management approach change?
The Western Park Leisure Center will adjust the timing for removing eulalia to March to May, allowing it to remain throughout winter. However, some areas will be designated as preservation zones based on growth conditions, with ongoing monitoring planned.
Meanwhile, the removed eulalia will be repurposed into large sculptures or donated to cultural spaces, contributing to resource recycling.
Ecological Benefits for Migratory Birds
How does preserving eulalia benefit the ecosystem?
World Cup Park, the only mountainous park near the Han River, serves as an ecological hotspot where winter migratory birds like the red-breasted merganser and kestrel can be observed. Preserving the eulalia will create a more stable environment for these birds to stay during winter.

Future Management Plans
What are the future management plans?
After winter, the condition of the eulalia will be checked, and replanting will focus on dead specimens. This will help restore the health of the eulalia cluster, ensuring that it remains a representative attraction of Seoul.
