Overview of the Seoul Museum of Art Seosomun Main Building
Seoul Museum of Art has announced its major exhibitions for 2026, setting 'Creation' as its institutional agenda and 'Technology' as its exhibition agenda. Various exhibitions and multifaceted programs will be presented at the Seosomun Main Building, North Seoul Museum of Art, Art Archive, and Photo Museum.
First, the Seosomun Main Building will host the exhibition 'Yu Youngkuk: The Mountain is Within Me' in May, celebrating the 110th anniversary of the birth of the pioneer of Korean abstract art, Yu Youngkuk. In October, an exhibition featuring the renowned international artist Lyn Hirschman Leeson will take place.
'Yu Youngkuk: The Mountain is Within Me' (May 14 - October 18, 2026) is the largest retrospective in history, spotlighting Yu Youngkuk's extensive body of work, including unpublished pieces.
'Lyn Hirschman Leeson' (October 1, 2026 - February 7, 2027) reflects the 2026 exhibition agenda of 'Technology' and surveys over 60 years of work by the veteran American media artist and filmmaker. This exhibition marks her first solo show in an Asian museum.
At the North Seoul Museum of Art, the sensory relationship of seeing, reading, and listening will be explored in the media-focused exhibition 'The Art of Writing' in April and the international exchange exhibition 'Sound Has Always Been Alive' in December.
'The Art of Writing' (April 23 - July 12, 2026) investigates the creative process of various forms of writing, from poetry and novels to screenplays and song lyrics.
'Sound Has Always Been Alive' (December 10, 2026 - March 21, 2027) is a large-scale international planning exhibition resulting from SeMA's collaboration with Northeast European countries, showcasing avant-garde sound art and sound-based performances.
The Seoul Museum of Art Archive will host the collection exhibition 'Oh Yoon Collection' (August 27, 2026 - February 21, 2027) to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the passing of Oh Yoon, a representative figure of 1980s Minjung art.
The South Seoul Museum of Art will present the annual sculptor solo exhibition 'Jo Suk-jin' (July 29 - November 15, 2026), featuring works from her early relief series to installation, performance, and architectural projects developed in New York.
The Seoul Museum of Photography will hold the 13th Seoul Photo Festival 'Come Back Home' (April 9 - June 14, 2026), exploring the meaning of 'home' through various photographic expressions.
Additionally, the upcoming Seoul Museum of Art in Seo Seoul will showcase special opening exhibitions, including the construction record exhibition 'Our Time Starts Here,' highlighting the significance of the museum's establishment.
Moreover, SeMA will host a performance titled 'Breath,' exploring the intersection of body, art, and society, and a new media collection exhibition focused on youth titled 'Transparent |Youth| Machine.'
